Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Thompson
Hi Lauren, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My obsession with all things bows/hair actually started when I was in 1st grade. My mom always made it a point to make me feel good by getting me dressed every day and putting in a matching bow, which I LOVED. After a few weeks of me being in my new first grade class, my teacher started complimenting me daily on my bows. Every day when I would walk in she would say “I couldn’t wait to see which bow you came in with today”. I would BEAM every time she complimented me, and it really added to my confidence as a kid. Once I had my own daughter I really wanted to do the same for her. As I started doing her hair every day I realized that I wanted to share my love for hair online and give others the opportunity and ideas to do the same for their little ones. I’ve noticed such a difference in her confidence after we get ready for the day, and infusing her with self confidence and love is so important to me.
That grew into me really wanting to branch out in creativity and make my own line of bows to share with you all as well. So that love turned into SLICK’D HAIR CO, and I couldn’t be more excited to share these incredible handmade bows with all of you. We hope you love them as much as we do.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Starting this business has definitely been a rewarding journey, but like any other business, it’s had its challenges. One of the initial hurdles was finding reliable suppliers for high-quality materials that met both my standards and the needs of my customers. I also had to learn the ins and outs of marketing and building an online presence, which took time and persistence.
But each challenge has been an opportunity to grow. I’ve learned a lot about managing inventory, responding to customer feedback, creating desirable patterns and designs, and perfecting the customer experience.
While the road hasn’t always been smooth, it’s been incredibly fulfilling to see my business evolve and to connect with families who love my bows. Ultimately, the struggles have made the successes even more meaningful, and I’m excited about the continued growth of the business!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Almost seven years ago, I graduated from cosmetology school with a deep passion for hair and a desire to make people feel confident and beautiful. Although life led me down a different path and I ended up working at a medical aesthetics company, my love for hair was reawakened when I became a mom to my beautiful daughter almost three years ago.
As she started growing more hair, I found myself reminded of the joy and satisfaction I’ve always felt from styling hair—and the confidence it can bring. I began experimenting with creative styles for her every day, and that sparked the idea of sharing those looks on social media. I wanted to inspire other moms to feel the same excitement about doing their daughters’ hair as I did. To my delight, my social media following grew quickly, and I was able to connect with an amazing community of moms who shared the same passion.
As I continued styling her hair each day, I realized that I wanted to have the perfect bows to complete these looks. That’s when the idea for Slick’d Hair Co. was born—my own bow business that would provide the exact accessories I had been searching for. It’s been such a fun and rewarding journey, learning the ins and outs of the small business world while bringing my creativity to life.
How do you think about luck?
I think anyone in the social media business will tell you that it is a whole lot of consistency mixed with luck. I was very fortunate to be able to grow my social media following quickly so that I could have the community in place to launch my bows to.
