Meet Lindsay Mitchell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay Mitchell.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started taking photos in middle school way back in 2012. It started with small photoshoots where my friends and I would get dressed up and take photos in my backyard. I was always the photographer. Then in high school, I took every photo class I could including AP photo, which led me to become the school’s yearbook photo editor. Throughout high school, I entered many photo competitions and quickly realized I wanted to be involved with photography for the rest of my life.

In the fall of 2017, I started at Southern Utah University. I graduated in 2021 with my Bachelor of Fine Arts focus in studio arts (a fancy way of saying photography) and my minor in Art Education. While there I took lots of art classes from art history to printmaking. Along with all my photo-focused classes. I developed and launched Desert West Photography in the summer of 2020 and have been photographing graduations, weddings, and elopements ever since.

While also running Desert West Photography I also teach Intro Photography classes for Southern Utah University (online). In college, I was a teacher’s assistant for a professor that kind of recruited me for the position.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Well, let’s start with launching a business in 2020. Luckily, I had amazing friends and family that helped me boost my online presence and get my name out there. Other than that I feel like my challenges have been similar to other business owners. A lot of trial and error when figuring technical things out as well as a lot of editing and re-editing until I’m satisfied.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a west coast photographer who specializes in weddings, elopements, couples, and portraits. I mainly travel from Utah to Nevada but, will travel almost anywhere to capture unique love stories. Many people describe my work as warm, artistic, and sometimes moody. I would probably agree with them!

I hope that most people see me as a comfortable photographer. I can pretty much get along with anyone and will always make you feel your best in front of my camera. In fact, I send out a questionnaire before photographing my clients to ask them what I can do to make them feel more comfortable. Need me to wear that embarrassing middle school band tee to help you giggle? Or I can bring some champagne to pop during the session. I’m always down for silly intimate moments.

A few months ago I also started offering Polaroid photos. If you check out my website under my fine art link you’ll see that I shot entirely with Polaroid i-Type film for my senior capstone project. Needless to say, I fell in love with the medium and had to find a way to continue to shoot film.

What makes you happy?
Cameras/Photography, my family, cats, food, the outdoors (specifically the desert), and making other people happy. Cliché answer I know. I have always loved helping people and did a ton of volunteer work in high school. So, I found a way to combine some of the things that make me happy!
