Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Vinson.
Hi Lisa , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Mark and I founded Vinson Inspection Services, doing business as Vinson Home Inspections, in 2002. Prior to starting the company, Mark worked as a licensed electrician, performing both commercial and residential electrical work, primarily in construction.
In 1997, when we sold our home, the buyers hired a home inspector—something we hadn’t even known existed at the time. A few years later, in early 2002, the economic downturn following 9/11 led to Mark being laid off from his construction job. That moment became an opportunity to consider a new career path.
Mark pursued professional training and certification through ASHI (American Society of Home Inspectors). After completing his training and becoming certified, we opened our home inspection business and began serving our community.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was far from a smooth road. During the first seven to ten years, there were many moments when we considered throwing in the towel. Growing a business and reaching profitability is an enormous challenge. But through years of testing new marketing strategies and working through countless obstacles, we built the business to a point where it finally became profitable.
We’ve been impressed with Vinson Inspection Services, dba Vinson Home Inspections, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Vinson Home Inspections was built the hard way—through experience, persistence, and an unwavering commitment to doing things the right way. Like many small businesses, the early years were challenging. It took time, trial and error, and a great deal of hard work to grow the company into a profitable, respected business. That journey shaped who we are today.
We specialize in thorough, honest, and easy-to-understand home inspections for buyers, sellers, and homeowners. Our inspections go beyond simply checking boxes. We take the time to educate our clients, explain findings clearly, and help them truly understand the condition of the home they’re buying or selling. Clients consistently tell us they appreciate our attention to detail, clear communication, and the confidence they feel after an inspection.
In addition to traditional home inspections, we also provide third-party building code inspections for factory-built residential and commercial buildings. This specialized work allows us to support safe, compliant construction at a broader scale and reflects the depth of our technical knowledge and experience.
One partnership we are especially proud of is with The Other Side Village. We inspect many of the tiny homes being built for individuals experiencing homelessness, helping ensure these homes meet building code standards and are safe, durable, and livable. Being part of a project that directly impacts lives in such a meaningful way is something we truly value, and it reflects the heart behind our work.
What sets Vinson Home Inspections apart is our experience and our approach. We don’t rush inspections, and we don’t rely on fear-based reporting. Instead, we provide balanced, accurate information so clients can make informed decisions. Our reputation has been built largely through referrals, which speaks to the trust we’ve earned in the community.
Brand-wise, we are most proud of our credibility, longevity, and integrity. Our brand represents reliability, transparency, and long-term commitment—not shortcuts.
What we want readers to know is that Vinson Home Inspections is more than an inspection company. We don’t just inspect structures—we help protect investments, support responsible building, and provide peace of mind during some of life’s most important transitions.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I like best about Salt Lake City:
Salt Lake City has a strong sense of community and an incredible quality of life. You’re minutes from world-class mountains, outdoor recreation, and four distinct seasons, yet still have the amenities of a growing metro area. There’s a real pride here in building things well—whether that’s businesses, neighborhoods, or community programs. We also appreciate how supportive the local market is of small, locally owned businesses and service providers who show up and do good work.
What I like least about Salt Lake City:
Like any growing city, rapid growth has its challenges. Increased traffic, rising housing costs, and the pressure growth puts on infrastructure can be frustrating. There’s also the ongoing air quality issue during inversion season, which is something the community continues to work through. That said, these challenges are largely a reflection of how desirable the area has become, and we’ve seen Salt Lake City make meaningful efforts to address them.
