Meet Lucy Segura of Pleasant Grove

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucy Segura.

Hi Lucy, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Growing up, I was surrounded by many women who loved baking and I found myself eager to learn and follow in their footsteps. Baking grew to be a symbol of “home” for me and is my biggest comfort even to this day. Many changes happened in my life following my first year of marriage and that is when I really focused on baking, branching out, pushing myself, and learning new things. I’ve always had the dream of starting my own baking business and my husband has always encouraged me to go for it and with his constant love and support, I did.

I distinctly remember at a very young age having an encouraging conversation with my dad. He wisely told me, “you can do anything you set your mind to”. I carry those words with me and it has become my mantra and is a driving force in my life. Starting a business is incredibly intimidating, but I truly believe that I can do anything I set my mind to. Even though Heavenly Bites is still a very young business, I’m excited and eager to see where it takes me and how much I will grow along the way.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It most definitely has not been a smooth road. From failed baking endeavors, and struggling to incorporate a work/life balance, to diving headfirst into the challenges of getting approved for my cottage food permit, and all the many administrative tasks that go along with starting a business. As challenging as some of these things have been, I also have been empowered to see what I’m capable of doing and being able to learn so many new things. I truly do love it.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
There are so many talented bakers in Utah, so it was my goal to find a way to set myself apart from other bakers. Heavenly Bites specializes in creating cake pucks. It’s something so new that not many people know what it is. It is essentially a cake pop in the form of a “puck”. The difference not only being its shape, but also the ability to add fillings and create all kinds of desserts. We not only fill our pucks with cake, but we also are able to do all kinds of desserts like fruity pebbles, peanut butter, and chocolate chip cookies all encased in delicious varieties of chocolate. The possibilities are endless. We recently added the ability to put edible images on top of the pucks so they can be fully customizable.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Don’t let the stress take away from the passion. Stress is such a powerful emotion that it can so easily derail me from remembering why I started this all in the first place. When I am able to take a step back and remember the passion, then everything falls back into place. Making work your passion is a challenge, but it’s so rewarding at the end of the day.
