Today we’d like to introduce you to Madison Pope.
Hi Madison, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
While I was getting a degree in fine arts at Utah State University, I became interested in video. I suddenly spent just as much time making weird films as I did on my major (painting and drawing). There was no film program at the school at the time, but I found a group of students who were also interested in video. We helped teach each other and figured things out together. After graduation, I found I could make money through wedding videography and pursued that for a time. When I felt like I was ready for a change, I entered the commercial world. I produced for a studio and shot videos on my own. I was frequently asked if I could also do photography – so I finally bit the bullet and started figuring out photos. It’s similar to video, but also an entirely different way of thinking and working with the camera! This opened up more doors of opportunity for me and I was able to grow my business more. A few years ago, I was invited to try out the set design. I immediately discovered that this was something I loved to do and that it came naturally to me. I felt like it finally brought back more of my fine art degree into my work – I was using color theory, design principles, etc. Through practicing set design my photo and video shoots became more creative and I found that I was having more and more fun and becoming better aligned with the work I wanted to do.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve always felt like I’m figuring things out as I go – which sometimes means finding things out the hard way. However, with practice and persistence, I’ve found that everything I’ve gone through has helped get me to where I need to be. At some point, all the experience started adding up and I finally found the momentum I’d been hoping for. I think the hardest part for any artist is to have enough faith in yourself to keep trying. I find if I stick to things and follow my intuition, it usually lands me in the right spot.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’ve tried a lot of different things! Lately, I’ve been having a lot of fun making creative sets and shooting portraits on them. There are so many talented creatives in Utah and there are always wonderful people to work with.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
During the crisis, I found that it was a good time to be a videographer, as so many things had to suddenly be done virtually. I filmed a special video for a high school graduation when they couldn’t do the regular procession, I was involved in shoots for home fitness, and when musicians couldn’t do concerts, they turned to making music videos. Being creative with video was one way to help others still share important moments and aspects of their lives. I really learned how deeply humans need to connect and create with one another.
