Today we’d like to introduce you to Mara Delgado Nunez.
Hi Mara, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
My story starts in Venezuela, where I was born and grew up in. My parents have always been my inspiration, and motivation to be better in everything that I do. Growing up with little I saw education as a way to move up in society, be able to become successful, and accomplished my goals. My parents never told me that dreaming big was impossible. they made all the sacrifices for me to do what I wanted to be able to succeed.
I was able to graduate from a very prestigious University in my country “Universidad Catolica Andres Bello” because I wanted to become someone that didn’t have to struggle to have basic needs. I believe education can help us to grow, become independent, learn to think out of the box, navigate society in a way where we can make our own choices based on what we learn, and want. I was teaching at a prestigious High School, social sciences. I love working with the young and teaching them history and learning about our leaders, society, norms, and values. I wanted to inspire them to always do their best in life.
After graduation, I decided to move to the United States. I fail in love with Utah, the mountains, the people, and the culture. I remember looking out of the window of the car that picks me up at the airport and just admiring the scenery. I love this Country since I put my feet here. I didn’t know what to expect but I was up to the challenge. Not speaking the language, but eager to learn, and ready for the challenge.
With time I married and divorced, but I had two beautiful boys that saved me and taught me to fight in life, my motivation every day is to be able to keep going. I decided to enroll at Utah Valley University. As a single mom was a very difficult time, but with many good accomplishments thanks to God and his power to give me strength. So many resources, and opportunities. I always had an interest in International Relations, learning from different Countries and people, learning diversity, and respecting our differences. I wanted to work in a Consulate, or anything related to Immigration, in UVU I was able to travel, I was the first woman and Latina to travel to the United Nations for an internship for a week and the General Assembly in 2012. I was able to also intern at the Peruvian Consulate in Salt Lake City, volunteer at an Elementary school working with the youth, and volunteer as a mediator at the District Court, and I graduated CUM LAUDE in 2015.
I was able to work for the Utah Safety Department after graduating and for BI Incorporated as Immigration Manager, a company contact for Homeland Security.
I started my own business as an Immigration Consultant in 2020, with the support of my family. I always wanted to be able to help the community and share all the knowledge, because as an Immigrant I know how many people value this beautiful country. A country that has given me everything, a family, a career, and opportunities.
I got my license and to be able to gain the community’s trust in their immigration process takes time. I started to use Google reviews because it was the only way people will get to know me by working with me and seeing how hard I work, and how this business means a lot to me. This business is built by sacrifices and educating myself thru the years trying to understand the system and working with people from different backgrounds, and you don’t have to understand but we do need to respect each other so we can all navigate this world together.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As an immigrant you go thru different challenges, I will say not speaking the language was very difficult in the beginning because I was in love with the culture, and the people.
When I wanted to explore and find a job after graduating at the State or Federal level, being a single mom was seeing by many as a disadvantage but they didn’t know that for me that was the strength that was making me who I am, that was my motivation, and the power inside of me to want to follow my dream and accomplished my success. I was even told that working for the State government was not for people like me. Being a woman can be seen as a weakness in our society, but my mission has always been my dreams and my goals.
When you start a business it’s very difficult because you have to let the community know who you are, I work very hard to always provide the best service that I can as an Immigration Consultant. I am not an attorney, and I do not offer legal advice. I help with paperwork for many Immigrant and non-immigrant visas and paperwork. I care for my community, and I am very grateful I can do something for so many people in this beautiful country.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
TPS DACA. FOIA. Visas. Passports. Family Petition. Green Card. Citizenship. Fiance Visa. Adjust Status.
Humanitarian Parole. Work Authorization. Translations and more.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I think every business works differently but networking is very important. In my case, I started to use social media to let friends know what I was doing. It was very difficult in the beginning because people didn’t know who I was to trust with their immigration process.
So I started to have my clients leave a review on Google and that’s how started to work because people will look for immigration services and see the reviews and have an idea about my work based on people’s experience. And little by little I have been building my clientele providing the best service and posting on social media or any changes in immigration services, etc.
