Today we’d like to introduce you to Maren Mullin.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
In 2003, I landed in Park City for love — and stayed and started my businesses here, where the community and friendships have been supportive and inspiring. That love? We married in 2010 and have two kids now. After a series of odd jobs in Park City, I began working at an art gallery and loved it. It was such a perfect fit.
I had always known that I wanted to start my own business, and suddenly it felt right. The timing was not great — this was 2008 and I was 25 — but I also had nothing to lose, so I began Gallery MAR. I rented a small space on Main Street, and then the market crashed. Luxury goods were not a hot ticket item, but we slowly built up the business with incredibly talented artists who were willing to take a risk on me.
After fourteen years, the best staff I can ask for, and a move to our current (larger) space we have the pleasure of representing some of the top artists in the West and a few big names in Contemporary American Art. Three years ago, I brought on my partner Thomas Cushman and opened a gallery in Carmel-By-The-Sea, California.
It had always been a dream to have a gallery there, and Cushman and I connected at the right time with the right vision for our gallery by the sea.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s the mistakes that make you better, right? Well, I have had many. Wrong paths for leadership, artist choices that were a flop, contract disputes, clients who have to sell their art when they land in prison, the stories are unending.
Someday, I will have to write it all down. Day-to-day, our struggles are small: The art world is full of joy and beauty, and the people we get to work with making this journey all the more fun.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
At Gallery MAR, we have a motto: Fresh Art, Bold Vision. What we do is a reflection of this, from how we curate our artists, to our display and client relationships. We have built an amazing roster of artists and are very proud of our selections and what we present.
That is an art in and of itself and we do our best to represent our artists in the very best light possible.
What matters most to you? Why?
My family — my husband and two children are my priority, and I’ve built my business life and schedule around making sure I stick to that ethos.
