Today we’d like to introduce you to Masami & Rhea. They and their team shared their story with us below:
Masami and Rhea, both POC women, have taken up skiing and snowboarding once covid started. With remote work being an option, Masami spent the ski season in Golden, BC, and fell in love. They both have grown up in an area where Skiing/Snowboarding was not as easily accessible and once they got introduced to the sport, they were both instantly hooked.
Over the course of the last few years, we would visit several ski towns with friends. We wanted to commemorate these memories and could not find many options in the towns we visited. We immediately thought of designing candles and gifting them to friends. We’re introducing a new candle company inspired by the majestic beauty of ski hills and designed by POC women.
Our candles are designed to capture the essence and spirit of the mountains, with scents that transport you to the slopes, no matter where you are. Our candles are made with high-quality ingredients and are hand-poured in small batches, ensuring that each candle is of the highest quality and delivers a long-lasting and aromatic experience.
We’re hoping that this brand encourages more POC women to start this sport and enjoy the outdoors.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
There were many roadblocks along the way.
Initial Investment: Starting a candle business requires an initial investment in equipment, raw materials, packaging, and marketing. We had to figure out how to make candles that meet our expectations.
Competing in a Crowded Market: The candle market is highly competitive, with numerous established brands and a plethora of new businesses entering the market every year.
Building a Customer Base: Building a loyal customer base takes time and effort. You need to create a strong brand identity, engage with your customers on social media, and offer excellent customer service to keep them coming back.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We always loved art and design. We both took business in university and immediately entered the workforce post-school. During the pandemic, we wanted to explore our creative side.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
There are fewer germs in the mountains.
