Meet Melissa Fischer of Park City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Fischer.

Hi Melissa, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
One of the most pivotal moments in my life was navigating an unexpected divorce. At the time, I had spent several years focused on raising my three young children while my former husband traveled extensively for work.  Re-entering the workforce after that chapter was daunting, especially considering my prior professional background was in acting, free diving, and spear fishing, hardly the most aligned resume for life in the ski mountains of Utah.

I knew that in order to support my family, I would need more than just a job, but I needed to build a meaningful and sustainable career. Creativity had always been at the core of who I am, and I had always loved helping friends design and transform their own homes. With that in mind, I reached out to a couple friends in Park City who had built successful careers in interior design to learn how I could begin a path of my own in the industry.

One recommended an Architectural Interior Design program through Berkeley Extension, while another connected me with an internship opportunity under an established designer. I embraced both opportunities, balancing my education and early professional experience while simultaneously navigating  my new role of a single mom. What began as a time of profound challenge ultimately became the solid foundation for the career and company I have built today.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Building MFI has been incredibly rewarding, but it has certainly not been without challenges. Interior design is so much more than just creating beautiful spaces, it requires managing relationship with clients, contractors, subcontractors, and vendors, often over the course of year or more. Success in this industry depends heavily on three pilars communication, trust, and establishing clear expectations from the very beginning.

Like many entrepreneurs, I faced difficult lessons early on. There were instances of client payment issues, costly project mistakes, and moments when small setbacks had very real financial consequences. In the beginning, those challenges could impact everything, and were very scary. Those experiences taught me resilience and helped create the systems and standards that define us as a business and how we operate today. Without the bumps, there would be far less growth.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Client’s have trusted MFI and found we exceed their expectations with not only the level design that we bring to a project, but the intuitive and personal approach we take. This approach creates an end product unique to any other it is both personal and reflects the people that live with in. We dive deep into understanding our client and cater are award winning designs to fit them, creating a home that is like no other. In a world of trend overload and copy and paste interiors, our discerning clients appreciate their one of kind designed space.

What sets MFI apart is that we don’t design from trends. we design from intuition, experience, and a very real understanding of how people live. I’ve rebuilt my own life from the ground up, and that gives me a different lens. I see homes not just as spaces, but as anchors. As places where people land, reset, connect, and grow.

And I design accordingly.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
Success in this industry is never a solo effort. I’ve been incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by people who showed up at pivotal moments in my journey.

Early on, three women played a foundational role in helping me step into interior design. Pamela Quigley guided me toward formal education when I didn’t know where to start, Stephanie Hunt helped open doors and expand my vision of what was possible, and Hope Chappelle took a chance on me when I was still very green bringing me in as a design assistant and giving me real-world experience that shaped everything that followed. Their willingness to share knowledge, time, and belief in me changed the trajectory of my life.

Beyond that, my clients have been some of my greatest collaborators and advocates. The ones who trust the process, who allow us to push creative boundaries, and who value both the design and the relationship. Many of them have become long-term supporters of the business and have referred us again and again, which has been instrumental to our growth.

My team and project partners, contractors, vendors, and collaborator also make the wheels spin gracefully. The best projects happen when there is mutual respect, clear communication, and shared standards. When that alignment exists, it elevates everything.

I’ve very much feel earned that success isn’t just about talent or drive, but also about the people who stand beside you, challenge you, support you, and sometimes carry you when things get hard. I’m deeply aware that I didn’t get here alone, and I don’t take that for granted.
