Meet Natalie Surut of Rooted Physical Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalie Surut.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey to becoming a clinic owner started in my early twenties, when I returned to Salt Lake City after leaving a PhD program in Chicago. During that time, I was feeling a bit lost as to my direction in life. I decided to enroll in a Pilates teacher training program and immediately fell in love with the human body. I went on to become a Fully Certified STOTT Pilates instructor and had the privilege of teaching movement for over five years. Around the five year mark, I began to investigate how I could deepen my knowledge of the body which led me to physical therapy. I completed my Doctor of Physical Therapy at the University of Utah and have specialized in pelvic health physical therapy ever since. Pelvic health physical therapy is a unique and underrepresented field. There is a great need for the expertise and care of pelvic health physical therapists, but not enough of us within the community to meet that need. After working in a hospital-based clinic for a number of years, I decided to open my own practice to better meet the evolving needs of my community and increase patient access to pelvic health physical therapy.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey has been circuitous and personally challenging. Opening a clinic and betting on myself has forced me to face old belief systems that encouraged playing it safe and sticking with the more traditional career path of physical therapists. Believing in myself, my ability to create a model that meets the needs I was seeing in the community, and taking the risk to leave security for the unknown has required radical self-honesty. It has also been the most rewarding adventure yet!

We’ve been impressed with Rooted Physical Therapy , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At Rooted Physical Therapy, we specialize in treating patients of all genders with abdominal and pelvic pain, bowel, bladder, and sexual dysfunction. Our comprehensive physical therapy approach is rooted in evidence-based practice and whole-person care which allows us to get to the core of patient’s specific concerns and develop a personalized treatment plan that addresses their individual needs for optimal recovery. We are passionate about collaborating with patients to provide evidence-based, trauma-informed care to those with complex medical conditions, including Ehler-Danlos Syndromes and dysautonomia.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Anything built with the intention of meeting a demonstrated community need is a worthwhile adventure!
