Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Spedale.
Hi Nicole, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hi, I’m Nicole, Founder and Lead Designer here at Homebasin. I’ve always believed that great design starts with creating spaces that feel authentic to you. I grew up in Michigan ✋🏼, where my father, a talented kitchen and bathroom designer, instilled in me a deep appreciation for the artistry behind functional, beautiful design. Our family moved from house to house as my parents would remodel, so I’ve always been surrounded by the transformation of spaces—and it sparked a lifelong passion for design.
I pursued that passion at Northern Michigan University, where my work was showcased at a design exhibition in Milan, Italy. I later graduated with a BFA in Human Centered Design, focusing on furniture design. But it wasn’t just about theory—it was how to make spaces come alive. Throughout my young adult life and on a tight budget, I continued that mission by curating my living spaces with an eclectic mix of thrifted finds and DIY projects, transforming every rental into a home with just a fresh coat of paint and a lot of creativity.
After college, I took a leap and moved to Salt Lake City, where I worked for 10 years in the apparel design industry. From clothing and graphics to catalogs, my professional journey taught me how to think creatively within constraints, collaborate, and refine my craft. But through it all, I maintained my passion for interiors and freelanced, creating home goods and sharing my designs at events like Craft Lake City DIY Fair.
Eventually, my side hustle turned into something bigger, and I founded my own interior design firm. I’ve never felt more connected to my work or more excited about the impact design can have on people’s lives. Now, I’m on a mission to help you elevate your space—whether it’s through thoughtful, large scale renovations or small design changes that make a world of difference.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I feel as though my road to get here was made of brick. Stable, but a little bumpy. I have been lucky in that I was able to work in a creative field, with a stable job, income, 401k, etc. for the majority of my adult life. After returning back from my maternity leave with my second child, the company where I had been working (for almost a decade), decided to shift gears – pushing me out of a job. That was really scary for me, as I had always relied on that stability. But, ultimately that was the best thing to happen to me professionally. I now own my own business, am my own boss, and am able to do what I love – help people love their homes again.
We’ve been impressed with Homebasin Design, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Homebasin is an Interior Design & Real Estate business. I am the design side, and my husband (Mac Spedale), is the real estate side.
I offer a wide variety of services, but I specialize in remodels and decorating. Being a Midwest girlie at heart – I have a keen desire to bring in loads character and details that are often overlooked. I have a modern/traditional style, and will lean into my clients interests while working together on their given project.
I think that the design process can be really overwhelming for a lot of people. There are a lot of decisions that need to be made – and it can feel daunting. I am here to make that process easier. I have a very friendly and honest approach, and make it a less intimidating process.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Always trust your gut.
