Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Crow.
Hi Sam, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Growing up I thought I wanted to be a therapist, to help people live a little happier and healthier. As I went to college and traveled around, I picked up mountain biking and splitboarding. My whole world CHANGED. Being in the mountains connected me not only to my physical body but my emotional and spiritual body as well. I started coaching and guiding wanting to share this passion with as many people as possible.
As the years went on, I became more fascinated with the effects of mindset and nutrition on my performance and ability to show up within each sport both professionally and personally. As I studied more and went back to school to become a health coach, I noticed a gap within the outdoor coaching industry. It became glaringly obvious we were not addressing these two key players and giving them credit for how much they impacted our time in the mountains.
By combining these passions of mine I have created Sam Crow Coaching. I am dedicated to helping women (cis/noncis and non-binary that identify with the women’s community) connect with their bodies, gain confidence, and live a healthy fulfilling life on and off the mountain.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The road has been fairly smooth, but the early stages of business has its own bumps and obstacles that’s for sure. A lot of which have started within.
Can I do this?
Who am I to be doing this?
Am I going to be able to consistently show up?
How long should I hold onto supplemental jobs and income?
All you deepest fears and limiting beliefs like to show up when you take big leaps when you get out of your comfort zone.
The fear and motivation to move through the obstacle let you know you care. Let you know this is something worth holding onto.
Owning a business has taught me a lot about myself. It has shown me what I am capable of. What limiting beliefs I have adopted. How to move under pressure. How to trust the process. And most of all has allowed me to help hundreds of women take a step towards their fears as well. I would take all the hard. All the struggle. Face all the obstacles again and continue moving through them now, to continue this work. To help more women find their resilience, to encourage them to take up space in the mountains, and reconnect them with their unique mind, body, and spirit.
The mountains hand us obstacles every day we decide to take on the adventure. Every day we choose to put our skis on, lace up our hiking boots, and grab our mountain bikes. But that is why we do it. The challenge and our response to it shows us what we are capable of, when & where we need support and brings us closer to the best versions of ourselves.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Holistic Mountain Coach.
Certified Health Coach, MTB coach, Avalanche Instructor, & Splitboard Guide.
I have combined my education and experience to help other women show up fully within the mountains and everyday life. For some that is going to focus more on self-care, work-life balance, and stress release; for others, it is to compete and perform at a higher level within their sport; and for most it is a combination.
I help my clients get back in touch with their bodies and their unique nourishment and movement needs, through careful tracking and reflection.
I also walk them through introspective practices such as journaling, meditation, and conversation to uncover their strengths, weaknesses, and their own definition of the sport and how they want to show up.
For each client our focuses are different, but one thing remains the same: Everything is connected. The mountains are a magnifying glass into our needs, desires, passions, and beliefs. All of which affect how we show up in our careers, relationships, sports, and personal lives. When we start working on one, inevitably they all reap the rewards.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I hope to continue building my online community, Summit Society. It is designed for outdoor-driven women (mountain bikers, hikers, trail runners, skiers, snowboarders, climbers, etc.) who are looking to come together to connect, share, learn, and grow from one another. Every month we get together virtually for a Mind, Body, Spirit Training that is presented through the lens of our mountain sports. The trainings are followed by an integration call to talk about how implementing the new practices & lessons went; because let’s be honest, integration of the trainings is 90% or more of the success, without it we stay in the same spot. The conversations and input is POWERFUL.
I would like to see this community grow worldwide with 100’s of 1000’s of women receiving the messages and inspiration. I know I don’t have all the answers. We all have something to bring to the table. We all have unique strengths and weakness, different experiences, and different views. The more we are able to connect and learn from others the more open-minded and open-hearted we can be, the more we can grow.
I hope for this community to grow into a powerful hub, a beautiful starting point, for women to start gaining confidence, resilience, and self-compassion, and for that ripple effect to be spread to other women in their local communities.
