Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Epperson
Hi Samantha, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Getting into events really happened because I’ve always loved curating a wonderful experience and I’ve always loved connecting with people.
I think it comes from my craving for adventure, I love traveling and spending time outdoors and I spend as much time as possible with my friends and family (including my wonderful partner, two dogs, and five chickens). I’m so grateful for the experiences I’ve had and I rarely have time to get bored, I’m always on the go or posted up at my favorite bar with my favorite people.
After school I bounced around in different fields (broadcast television, the NBA, insurance, bartending, you name it and I’ve probably done it) until I finally ended up here at Church & State, booking events in the heart of downtown Salt Lake City. I absolutely love my job, which feels crazy to say, but its true! I love being my own boss, I love helping people’s events come to life, and being able to use my work to help community events find a home is such a great feeling.
Sometimes it really shakes me to think about how far I’ve come, I know that if younger Sam could she me now, she’d be proud of where I’m at.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Life hasn’t always been smooth, I’ve definitely faced my fair share of heartache and loss, but I’ve been really lucky to always have a strong support system around me. I’ve lost partners to suicide, friends to cancer, I’ve been fired, quit bad jobs, moved away, run back home, lost friends, and had to rebuild myself. But I honestly believe that the things we go through make us stronger people and hopefully mold us to be more compassionate to those around us. A life without trials would be great but I think that real character development happens when we’re at our lowest.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Church & State is a “Third Space” downtown on 300 east and 400 south, we focus on being a place in the community where people can come together, you can work during the week or rent the building out from me for any special events! I think what sets us apart is because I’m a one woman show I completely dedicate myself to the folks who want to use our space, I do everything I can do keep it accessible and affordable when that’s just not happening anywhere else. Our building is so unique and honestly stunning, and I love connecting with different groups and individuals through my job. I’m proud of the community we have in the building and our dedication to keeping a safe and open space for everyone to enjoy. I feel lucky everyday to be doing something I love.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I love the Huberman Lab podcasts, it’s actually really changed the way I live my life, especially my morning routine!!
I am an avid reader but since I usually stick to fantasy books I wouldn’t say they are changing my daily practices.
