Meet Sarah Kjorstad and Lara Azria-Reucassel

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Kjorstad and Lara Azria-Reucassel.

Hi Sarah and Lara, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started making hats and bands about 3.5 years ago in Jackson Hole as I felt there was a need for a more contemporary, western brand in town- something you could wear while on your Jackson adventures, but also feel comfortable wearing when you are back home. I grew up on a ranch in Wyoming, so I wanted the company to be rooted in the American West, but with a more modern take.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Getting into hat-making is the complete opposite of a smooth road. It’s a labor of love and commitment. Finding anyone willing to teach you is difficult, but if you are lucky enough to find a mentor, acquiring the equipment is another challenge. Much of the equipment I use is a century old, and not manufactured anymore, so it is a challenge to get and keep it running. I have shed a lot of literal blood sweat and tears into this process. You really need to be a part creative artist, part mechanic, and all workhorse.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a maker of felt hats, hat bands and accessories. I enjoy making hats that are customizable, wearable works of art. What sets our brand apart is the ability to create a look that is unique to each client by using our hand-loomed, beaded bands that we design and produce in-house as well as pins, fabrics and stitching. Nothing gets permanently attached to the hat, so you can create multiple looks with one hat. You are the designer of your own piece!

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Hat-making has become increasingly popular over the past few years, but even more so after the release of the TV show Yellowstone. It seems the urban-Western vibe is here to stay for a while. We are really seeing an increased interest in western-style hats, but with the demand comes to a cheaper, mass-produced hat from some brands. It will be interesting to see how things play out, but there will never be a substitute for a locally handmade, felt hat produced by a multi-generational Wyoming native.
