Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheri Brown.
Hi Sheri, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
The Midway Art Association Gallery opened its doors in 2018 as a place for members to display their art. We have seven new members every two months for a total of 42 artists a year manning and selling their art.
Norma Burgner was the member of the board of directors that was able to get the gallery opened. When she passed away in 2023, several works of art were donated for the “Art for Norma” scholarship fund. We are able to fund two high school scholarships a year and give certificates for art supplies to four high school artists at the Springville Museum of Art Annual Utah All-State High School Art Show.
We have a lot of very talented artists and would love to have the public come and see the art. We recently had a new group of artists installed in the gallery in August with an opening reception the first Saturday of the two-month exhibit. We’ll be changing out the 1st of October and will have an opening reception on October 3 from 12-5 pm. We are open Fridays and Saturdays from 10 am – 5 pm and the second Friday of each month until 8 pm for the “Art Walk”, or by appointment.
I’ve been able to be on the Board of Directors for the past two and a half years and have thoroughly enjoyed it. Jerry Watterworth recently stepped down as president after nearly ten years and he will really be missed.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’ve only been involved with the gallery for 2 – 1/2 years, but I know that it took a lot of planning to figure everything out.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
The Midway Art Association sponsors the Wasatch Plein Air Paradise each year. It’s the largest Plein Air event in Utah and we have to cap it at 135 artists each year. It is a great place to see and purchase exceptional art. We love our artists. We have monthly meetings the third Wednesday of each month from September to May where we are able to see art demonstrations. We also sponsor various art classes throughout the year..
I, personally, am not a professional artist but love to watercolor and do stained glass. I love art and have numerous paintings in my home and in my husband’s business in Heber from the WPAP event and the gallery. I have a BA in Humanities with an emphasis in Art History. I worked at the BYU Museum of Art previously and am currently on the Provo City Landmarks Commission.
The gallery is made up of artists from all over Utah. It’s a great place to find great art.
