Meet Stauney Hansen and Sadie Anderson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stauney Hansen and Sadie Anderson.

Hi Stauney and Sadie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
It all really began when we were in the high school parking lot in Clearfield Utah ranting about how unfairly women were being treated in the music industry (mainly Taylor Swift of course), not even realizing we were discussing feminism.

Fast forward to when we were both attending Utah Valley University, Stauney was sitting in an Art History class, and heard the name Artemesia Gentileschi for the first time in her life… much to her surprise. As a young art history buff, she was extremely disappointed to find out a woman had been painting so early on, with such talent and passion, and she had never even heard her name.

Sadie was only a few buildings away, hearing offensive comments from male students talking about the talent of female composers, and searching for a female composer for her assignments. The name Clara Schumann came up enough to pique her interest in this strange world of music history where women were obscured, barely even being given a footnote in the long list of music masters.

One thing was clear, there were more hidden women, and we both wanted to find them. Those parking lot conversations from high school quickly turned into more agitated conversations, a couple of late-night texts, a lunch where the podcast name came so quickly it was magic, and after purchasing some recording equipment, More Than A Muse was born.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has been smooth in one sense because we are both extremely passionate about this project and what we are talking about. When we first started the project, we were worried we would run out of ideas, but we’ve now done over 100 episodes and are still finding more and more women artists and topics we could discuss.

We’ve been able to stay consistent and have only missed a couple of weeks since starting, but it can sometimes be a challenge and be a sacrifice to make sure we are putting out an episode every week.

It can also be difficult being discovered in a digital market that has so much to distract. Getting found as a purely digital product, can be hard.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
More Than a Muse is a podcast all about women and artists. We find ignored women artists from history and telling their stories, but we will talk about anything women in the arts! Whether it’s discussing the women artist of the Impressionist Movement, discussing conspiracy theories that Shakespeare could’ve been a woman, or analyzing the biggest albums in pop music right now- we’ve got it all!

We really pride on ourselves on not being the experts. We take the things that we are learning each week and talk about them with our listeners! We wanted to make sure our episodes were accessible and fun to listen to even if you aren’t an art history buff.

As individuals, we are also artists pursuing our own passions! Stauney is a graphic designer who graduated with her BFA and minor in art history who currently works full-time as a graphic designer for a local UT company. Sadie is a singer and songwriter who releases music under her pop project, Dasie. We love that we can also add our own insights as artists to our podcast!

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
We are always looking for amazing artists to feature on our podcast! Every episode we take a break for our “Artists Spotlights” and each shout out an artist that we have found. If you’re looking for a chance to promote yourself, please reach out!

We also try to have a guest on our show at least once a month, so if you have a story that you’d like to share please email us and we can see if it’d be a good fit.

The best way to support a podcast is to listen and to share with your artist friends that you think would like it! Tip: We’ve heard that people love listening to our podcasts while they’re making their art. If you like the podcast too, a rating and/or review on the platform helps us grow!
