Meet Stephen Olson of Benchmark Body Metrics

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephen Olson.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
In 2019 I realized that my health wasn’t where I wanted it to be. Despite being active, going to the gym, playing basketball every week, and trying to eat well, I felt sluggish and below my potential. At the same time, I watched some of my family members begin to struggle with intense health challenges brought on in large part by years of neglecting their health and fitness. I made a commitment that I wanted to take better care of my health and wellness so that I could both have more energy now, and set myself up for as high quality of life as possible through my later years.

I found DEXA scans at the beginning of my journey. I was determined to make changes and I wanted a baseline to measure against. My first scan was a complete shock, but it gave me clarity about where I was and what to focus on. Regular DEXA scans helped me sustain my motivation to be consistent and intentional about reaching my health goals. I combined the scan data with other metrics to get a full picture on how I was building muscle, losing body fat, and lowering my risk for metabolic disease.

A few years later, I signed up for my first distance running event. I’d never been a runner before and hadn’t the slightest idea how to train. I learned about VO2 Max testing and signed up. The test data gave me suggestions on how to optimize my training, and my performance (and enjoyment) shot up almost instantly. The changes helped me run faster and longer than I’ve ever gone.

I became more interested in metabolic testing and found a mentor who had trained and coached olympics athletes. After learning from him I decided to open my own testing business on the side, running assessments out of my garage and the local gym I coached at.

After working with and training people who ran marathons, ultras, and Ironmans, competed in CrossFit, summited 22,000 foot peaks, and more, I learned that what often made the difference for them was getting clarity and confidence about their bodies and their training. I wanted a way to bring that clarity and confidence to everyone.

We put everything together and opened Benchmark Body Metrics in March 2025 with the mission to improve the world’s health and confidence by giving them access to the best, most reliable measurements available. My DEXAs and the gradual improvement they show over 5+ years have become a part of my identity as someone who measures and improves their health, and they keep me motivated towards achieving my goals. My hope is that everyone feels like they can take proactive control of their health and find success as they measure improvements and see meaningful results.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The first thing I had to do was to quit my full-time job in tech. This was a huge gamble. I had been in the Utah Valley tech start-up scene for 10 years, helping build some incredible companies. I’d made a great salary. Taking a bet on myself to leave and start a business that can support me, my wife, and six kids, is no joke. For the first couple months before we officially opened, I would cry myself to sleep at night wondering if I’d made the right decision.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are Utah’s premier health and wellness assessment clinic, specializing in DEXA scans, VO2 Max, metabolic, and blood testing. We use clinical-grade measurement tools to give people the clearest, most reliable, and personalized health data available, and use that data to transform the quality of their life. Body composition, cardiovascular, and metabolic health, are the most powerful proactive measurements to monitor health, track improvements, and improve longevity.

Our brand is centered on bringing confidence and clarity to health and wellness. We want people to feel confident in and motivated by their plans as they seek to live better. We’ve helped people measure their progress as they lose 100+ of pounds, train for their first marathon, set their hormones straight, prepare for body building shows, and get more fit in their 50s than they’ve been in their entire life. I’m so proud of the amazing things our clients accomplish. I have yet to see a client who does consistent DEXA scans not hit their health and fitness goals. Some of them have used scans or tests to break through five-year plateaus.

They say that what gets measured, gets managed, and I’ve never seen that to be more true than about people’s body weight, health, and wellness. DEXA scans are the gold standard for body composition measurements.

How do you think about happiness?
I am most happy when I help others gain more confidence in themselves. When I can be even a small part in someone accomplishing a goal they never thought possible, or taking control of their lives in a way they never imagined, I get fired up about my own life and feel like anything is possible.

Pricing:

  • Single DEXAs are $125
  • Our DEXA memberships make scans as low as $65/scan
