Meet Steven Helprin of Heber City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steven Helprin.

Hi Steven, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Business Outsource Services, LLC was founded as a side business in 2003 in Southern California by Steve Helprin (principal) while he worked as assistant controller for a specialty trades construction company. The two initial clients were the San Bernardino Area Chamber of Commerce, and a small manufacturing firm called Environmental Engineering, dba Indoor Air Technology. Over the many years since then, Steve has held managerial accounting roles in numerous industries, including construction trades, real estate development, property management, manufacturing, medical device industry, transportation, food production, sporting club, retail, and others.
Prior to working as an accountant, he owned a landscape design, construction and maintenance company first in the Seattle, Washington area, and then in Southern California. He remembers his first exposure to QuickBooks accounting software as owner and financial officer in these endeavors, back when QuickBooks delivered their product via multiple floppy discs in the US mail.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Having been a business owner himself for many years, Steve is well aware of the need for small business owners to focus on their core competencies without the worry of bookkeeping details. This is why Steve went back to school for accounting resulting in a BS in Business Administration – Accounting, a BA in Business Administration – Finance, minor in Information Management, and MBA with a concentration in Accounting. One challenge is that key competitors often have a CPA background, though that could be seen as an advantage in less complex issues, as Business Outsource Services charges much less than CPA’s tend to charge as a matter of entitlement.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Once established in Utah, the construction and property management projects that Steve worked on (more than $65,000,000 in contracts) mostly involved low-income housing, historic rehab, renewable energy systems, and other tax credit investments. This experience paved the way for tax preparation experience for small business tax credits. In addition to his regular duties in managerial roles, Steve has simultaneously handled business tax returns for the same core clients for more than ten years, as well as the owners’ individual tax returns, with many other tax clients along the way. Steve’s most recent position was that of Director of Accounting for a fast growing firm that buys, sells and services laser medical devices, which doubled in sales for each the years of his tenure there.
Business Outsource Services understand that accounting and finance functions are vital to running your business. They help you to make decisions, stay compliant, reduce costs, file and pay taxes timely and accurately, and provide meaningful information to management and external stakeholders. As you grow, these functions become more critical and complex, and require guidance.
You don’t need to hire expertise in-house. Business Outsource Services is a remote service whose mission is to serve small businesses in handling their bookkeeping needs on an outsourced basis, by experienced and knowledgeable persons, as an economically competitive solution superior to in-house staffing.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Steve has lived in six states (CT, VT, OR, WA, CA, and UT), is the proud father of three daughters and a son, enjoys playing guitar, finds peace in beautiful landscapes, loves cultural immersion through travel, and reveres God’s creation while experiencing the great outdoors.
