Today we’d like to introduce you to Sydney Myers.
Hi Sydney, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been expressing my unique view on the world around me since I was a small child, drawing on the walls of my childhood home. During high school and college, I was specifically interested in creating artwork with human subjects, such as self-portraits. During my undergraduate degree, I focused on Graphic Design, which took me far away from my original interest in fine art. I lost myself a little bit in the pixels and screens. After graduating, I realized how much I’d loved to paint and draw, and found myself as a growing human enjoying the process of creating by hand again, especially with the rise of Artificial Intelligence and technology. Today, I am an artist and designer, gravitating towards hand-crafted, raw work that blends the new with the old and refined. I create work that discovers and explores the natural environments that I love to explore with my feet, ultra-running and climbing. I find that there’s an interesting connection between what we make with our hands, because of what we see with our eyes, when our feet are taking us across ridges, mountains, and trails. My overall goal is to get more people off their screens and back into nature, going back to the basics of human nature.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
During childhood, my family did not have the financial resources to support my creative ideas. Additionally, my home life was chaotic and traumatic, which made it difficult to feel as though I could be a kid and explore all of the possibilities.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an artist and designer, often using oil paint, acrylic paint, oil pastels, and other mixed media. I am most known for my paintings that combine landscape and abstract marks. I’m most proud of being an artist who defies the current pressure to use Artificial Intelligence. I believe that human-made art will always be important, regardless of the technological advancements in our society. Humans crave the raw, the real, and I am proud to be a person who values the slow, intentional effort of putting paint on a canvas.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My advice to young artists and designers is to just make stuff. Make stuff every day, as much as you can, without worrying about perfection or the current trends, or how other artists are making a living. Don’t look at social media for inspiration, look outside. Look to what you’re passionate about in the real world. There is so much inspiration and originality to be found outside of our screens and media. Don’t worry about the traditional ways of getting a degree or needing to post on social media in order to sell your work. Just create every day, prioritize your passions, and the success will follow.
