Today we’d like to introduce you to Sydnie Pettingill.
Hi Sydnie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I started my photography journey years ago when I was taking an advanced high school art class. Soon after, I graduated, I moved to Alaska for work where I began truly diving into photography. While I was in Alaska, I dove into wildlife photography- photographing bears, moose, whales, orcas, dolphins, the salmon run, bald eagles, wolves, and the northern lights. Alaska definitely captured my heart!
After a few years of spending summers in Alaska and winters in Utah going to school at Utah State, I met my husband! I knew I wasn’t going to go back to Alaska, so I started exploring other forms of photography where I soon found weddings and then elopements! I quickly got sucked into Adventure elopements where I get to spend the day with the couple and explore our beautiful National Parks around the US. I love that it’s always an adventure and a challenge for each location!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I definitely wouldn’t say that the road has been smooth. Being self-employed is never easy and it’s a constant uphill battle. There is always some pressure to always have work, stay busy and keep up with bills. The second biggest thing I struggled with was finding a style that was true to me.
It took me years to develop my style, presets, and love for editing. Once I experimented and explored different styles, I soon discovered what I coined a Moody Romantic style. It keeps skin-tones light with a bit of warmth and a touch of softer colors.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in Adventure Elopements and capturing the raw, little moments between two people. I love the little smiles, soft touches, and little moments! I am known for close intimate photos between two people in the most breathtakingly beautiful places on earth. I would say that this is something that sets me apart from the others.
When looking for an elopement photographer, you want to be sure that you find someone who is experienced, knows their locations, is knowledgeable in all light situations, and has knowledge about the environment they are in. Your wedding photos are the only thing that will help you remember your day, they are the only thing that truly captures the moment as memories fade. These aren’t something that you want to skimp on!
What matters most to you?
The thing that matters most to me is capturing the moment and preserving it forever. This is something that I have really focused on since starting my journey to wedding photography. My wedding photographer lost all of my wedding photos. It’s something that I will never get to relive through photos and that is heart-wrenching for me.
Because of my experience, there are many rules and protocols I have installed for myself to make sure that what happened to me, never happens to any of my clients. In my eyes, there is more than one thing that makes a good photographer- just being good at taking photos isn’t the only thing that is important.
The way they professionally handle your photos afterward is just as important as their skill and knowledge in taking photos.
