Meet Sylvia Bunker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sylvia Bunker.

Sylvia Bunker

Hi Sylvia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My passion lies in the constant pursuit of creativity and exploration. Several years ago, I embarked on a transformative journey by enrolling in a Modern Copperplate Calligraphy class taught by the talented Melissa Esplin. This experience ignited a deep-seated love for the art form, prompting me to join the local guild where I delved into the intricacies of various calligraphic styles.

Driven by a relentless curiosity, I expanded my skill set to encompass hand lettering and chalkboard lettering, honing my abilities with each new project. While I had previously dabbled in designing business cards, it was a pivotal moment when I received a request to create a logo for the up-and-coming local eatery, Sobe Eats, that led me to venture into the realm of Graphic Design.

Recognizing the need to further develop my expertise, I seized an opportunity to work at the Love Letters Museum, where I had the privilege of learning from accomplished Lettering Artists and Designers. Inspired by their talent and guidance, I began contemplating the next phase of my career. This prompted me to explore local colleges and universities, ultimately discovering the highly competitive Graphic Design program offered at SLCC.

As fate would have it, the onset of the pandemic became the catalyst I needed to embark on a new chapter as a mother of two. Determined to continue my education, I embraced the opportunity to pursue online studies, quickly commencing my degree program. Within two years, I completed my degree, equipping myself with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in the field.

Eager to fulfill a lifelong aspiration of selling my greeting cards, I draw inspiration from my Mexican heritage. While I didn’t grow up speaking Spanish, I diligently learned the language to foster meaningful conversations with my grandparents, fondly referred to as Guelitos. My artwork and cards often pay homage to the clothing pieces they gifted me and the cherished memories we share. Last fall, I proudly launched my inaugural collection of cards and stickers, showcasing my creative vision.

Participating in numerous local markets has further fueled my ambition, and I am actively working towards expanding my catalog to cater to local stores. Although I continue to accept freelance assignments, I have recently embraced a part-time Graphic Design role at an Engineering Consulting firm, where I dedicate the majority of my time until July, when the other graphic designer returns from vacation.

Driven by an unwavering commitment to excellence and a desire to leave a lasting impression through my craft, I look forward to the exciting possibilities that lie ahead in my artistic journey.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Running a small business is a challenging endeavor. It requires navigating numerous aspects independently or investing in further education. In my pursuit of knowledge, I joined Proof to Product to enhance my skill set. While the group provided valuable tips, I haven’t reached the same level of expertise as many other members.

Nevertheless, I discovered a supportive community of peers who excel in brainstorming and problem-solving.

Throughout my academic journey, I encountered diverse individuals who have been instrumental in my progress.

They have offered valuable connections, answered my questions, and even provided job referrals. Even at present, juggling multiple roles proves demanding: being a mother, a spouse, an employee, a freelancer, an artist, and a small business owner.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I have expertise in creating bilingual cards and hand lettering. Recently, I’ve delved into the world of oil and acrylic painting, and I have a collection of cards featuring these mediums.

As a passionate plant enthusiast, my home is adorned with a plethora of plants. I take great delight in illustrating them, capturing their beauty alongside the pots they reside in. Some of these pots draw inspiration from traditional Talavera, the vibrant Mexican pottery, while others showcase different styles.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I love to travel and try new foods. My husband and I enjoy trying new restaurants for date nights.

I love plants and flowers. I’m planning my ideal garden for our new to us home.

Lately, we have been remodeling and setting into a new home.
