Meet Tanner Moffat of Arise Counseling Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tanner Moffat.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Shortly after graduating from UVU, a colleague of mine reached out to see if I would like to partner with him in turning his small private practice in to a mental health clinic in the heart of Provo. Together we decided to take on the task and began reaching out to stalwarts in the community to both get our name out there and build our own referral resources to provide to our clients. We first started out with BYU and LDS Family Services and then expanded to meeting with medical offices/clinics in the area and other therapy offices. Over time these relationships proved very beneficial and we were able to slowly grow to a point where we now have five therapists working with us in both Provo and Sandy! We are still small and growing, but the support we have received from our community has helped us to continue to grow and do what we love, which is helping those in our community know that if they are struggling with anything at all, we are here for them. Life can get better. There is always hope!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been difficult as we have tried to take my colleagues primarily cash pay private practice and turn it in to a clinic that is accessible to more members of the community! The biggest hurdle was learning how to work with insurance. Then it was our branding. Then it was securing a space for our growing clinic. Now it’s social media! As with any business starting out in the beginning, there appears to always be something that comes up. And often times as we look at our schedules and see what needs to be done, I want to crawl back in my bed and sleep the day away. But as we have learned to just take it one day at a time, cross one thing off the “To Do” list a day, it has become more manageable. It is rewarding to look back at the progress we have made, and beautiful to watch this small thing we have started continue to grow.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Arise Counseling Group?
At Arise Counseling Group, we believe that the foundation of effective therapy lies in the strength of the therapist-client relationship. Our mission is to create an environment where every detail is thoughtfully designed to support client healing, growth, and transformation. By fostering trust and understanding, we are dedicated to helping our clients overcome challenges and help guide them toward greater well-being and fulfillment.

We embrace the philosophy of Total Healing—a holistic approach that addresses challenges from every angle of life. We believe that true healing requires considering the whole person, including their financial and physical well-being, as well as their environment and mindfulness practices. Every client receives a personalized treatment plan that incorporates all these aspects, allowing us to offer a truly comprehensive path to healing. To provide this level of care, we also prioritize the wellbeing of our therapists. This balance fosters a healthier, more sustainable work environment and clinic culture, allowing our therapists to deliver the highest quality of care, fully dedicated to the growth and healing of every client, as well as the well-being of the therapist.

We have 7 therapists with 10+ years in the field working with children, teens, and adults on a variety of issues from couples counseling, to OCD, trauma, anxiety, depression, addiction and eating disorders. We are really proud of the effort we put in to our therapists to ensure that they are taken care of in order to put the best care possible in to our clients.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I grew up in San Diego, California. My parents told me I was a happy “surprise” and was six-years younger than my next oldest sibling. Because of this, I was essentially an only child in the home from 6th grade and on. I was great at entertaining myself! From an early age I really got in to sports, reading, and writing. As I got older, sports seemed to take over everything else, and continues to have a hold on me to this day! I think the six years of college made me ready to take a break from all the reading and writing. As a child, I didn’t know at the time, but I struggled with social anxiety and deep insecurities about my self-worth. It stopped me from trying my hardest in school and sports, leading me to not have as many opportunities as I believe I could have had. I didn’t know why, but I just felt like I couldn’t be myself with anyone outside of a select few, or that showing that I cared too much about something meant I was “weird”. This is something I continued to struggle with in my adulthood. Something that has taken a lot of work, my own personal therapy, and a lot of acceptance to feel like I could finally learn to manage my mental health, instead of letting it manage me.
