Today we’d like to introduce you to Tenesha Luckett.
Hi Tenesha, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My career journey started in 2013. I was a new single mom of a 2-year-old. I was doing collections and miserable. I knew that couldn’t be mine forever. I decided I should find some sort of trade that I enjoyed so I picked going to hair school. I went to Paul Mitchell on Holiday and it was the best decision I ever made. In school I figured out I really enjoyed just styling the hair, cutting wasn’t my thing, color wasn’t my thing, but just styling. I participated in a few photoshoots while in school and it was like a light switch went off when I was doing it, “that’s exactly what I want to do!”. After I graduated from school I worked in local a blow-dry bar for a few years. When the pandemic hit and I couldn’t work in the salons but I was presented with opportunities to go to LA and work on major campaign sets. That feeling from hair school was confirmed. I decided to take a risk and quit my job and freelance full time. Since then I have had amazing opportunities to work with amazing companies and sets locally and nationally. I’m so excited to see what’s to come.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. I am a single mom, and that aspect of life alone keeps me on my toes. I depend on my family a lot for help while I work, so grateful that I have a willing family who wants to see me become successful. Another challenge for me is learning how to network and build relationships to build and maintain a healthy work schedule. Learning the business side of the industry was also a challenge when I started. I feel like we are taught in school a little bit of business but not nearly enough.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in styling hair, set work, and being a diverse stylist that can do multi-texture hair. I am most proud of putting myself out there and becoming exactly what I wanted to become. I wrote down a few years ago that I wanted a client base that was strong powerful women and that’s exactly who my clients are. What sets me apart the most is that I specifically work with multiple types of people and textures of hair. I am a versatile stylist that can move from a photoshoot set to a wedding and execute the styles placed in front of me regardless of what the model looks like. One of the things I’m most proud of is that I prayed for exactly what I have now and despite being a single mom and having so many odds against me I have done and am continuing to do exactly what I want to do! I love it here!
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory is so simple but it is just playing outside every day with all the neighborhood kids until the lights came on.
