Today we’d like to introduce you to Thomas McAlinden.
Hi Thomas, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m a native New Yorker, and my journey into recovery began long before I realized it. My father worked in a neighborhood bar when I was growing up, and I spent a lot of time there as a child. I was drawn to the atmosphere at an early age, but addiction was also something that deeply affected my family.
In 1985, my older brother, John, died from an overdose in our home. I was the one who found him. It was one of the most devastating experiences of my life and completely changed the trajectory of my family. Just a few days later, my aunt, who had lived with us for most of her life, died by suicide. Those losses shattered my parents and left a lasting impact on me. Looking back, it’s clear that those traumatic events fueled my own struggles with alcohol and substance use.
Looking back, the trauma and my addiction gradually changed me into someone I barely recognized. I became a person my family and friends no longer recognized, and in 1987 I was arrested. Even then, I wasn’t ready to change. In 1990, my employer sent me to treatment, but it wasn’t until 1994 that I finally found lasting sobriety.
Recovery didn’t erase life’s challenges. During my first few years sober, I lost both of my parents, but I remained committed to building a new life one day at a time.
In 2005, I became the proud father of my daughter, who has been one of the greatest blessings in my life. After nearly 25 years working a union job, I retired in 2009 and followed what I believe was my true calling.
I was hired as a house manager at a private sober living residence in Brooklyn, where I spent six years learning how to support clients in early recovery. During that time, I was trained as a sober companion and developed the skills to work with private clients facing complex addiction and behavioral health challenges.
In 2014, I founded my own company, providing private recovery coaching and sober companion services. Since then, I’ve worked with clients throughout the United States and internationally. My work has been featured in The Wall Street Journal and on major New York television news programs, opportunities that have helped bring greater awareness to the importance of individualized recovery support.
Another profound loss came in 2020 when my twin brother, Tim, passed away from a 9/11-related cancer. He had found sobriety for ten months when he passed, and I was by his side holding his hand as he took his last breath. His courage continues to inspire me every day.
Today, my purpose is simple: to stay sober and help others find hope. If the work my team and I do can spare even one family from experiencing the heartbreak that mine endured when my brother John died from addiction, then I know this work has meaning.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Recovery is rarely a straight line, and neither is building a business centered around helping people during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.
One of the biggest challenges continues to be the stigma surrounding addiction and mental health. Too many individuals and families wait until a crisis becomes overwhelming before reaching out for help because they’re afraid of judgment or believe they should be able to handle it alone.
One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned is that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Recovery is possible, but no one has to do it alone. Every person and every family deserves compassion, dignity, and a personalized approach to care.
