Today we’d like to introduce you to Breanna Young.
Hi Breanna, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
My first job was at a reception center as a banquet server. I was 14 years old at the time, one day the florist came up in a panic and needed someone to help her. That day, I fell in love with florist work forever. I never did go back upstairs to severing. From there I tried to learn everything I could from her. Designing, the science behind flowers, what inspired her, and how she ran her own business.
Out of high school I starting designing weddings here and there for friends and family. In 2016, I was working a nine to five in a cubical just trying to make ends meet. My son was a year old and it felt like someone else was raising him because I was always at work. To say, I was miserable was an understatement. I didn’t like what I was doing for work and I missed my sweet boy like crazy.
Without much of a plan, one day I’d had enough, I walked out of my day job and I was going to do everything I could to make my business work. That day I started Breezy Floral. My passion for flowers and wanting to be with my baby was more important than the money. So I did it!
I worked out of my mom’s garage for the first couple of years. My goal was to do 12 weddings my first year, after 42 in my first year, I had done it. By year two, I had hired two employees and my goals kept climbing. I finally got to do what I loved every single day! In year two of my business, I was featured in two magazines for my weddings and growing.
Now we have been open for 5 years and we have to build a small shop of my house and do at least 60 or more weddings a year with our crew. From small elopements to extravagant events. It has been hard work and perseverance that got us where we are. I am so proud of Breezy and all the things we have been able to accomplish over the years.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Overall it has been pretty smooth for us. Of course with any business there are struggles. There will always be unhappy customers, and as we grew the more room there was for that. At first, I would be so hard on myself and beat myself up about not having things perfect. But I had to learn that no matter what some people will be upset and I have to shake them off, do my best and not let them get me down.
Another struggle would for sure be financial, in this business winters are SO hard. It’s a roller coaster with how much is coming in and when. There were some years, where I had to pick up another job just to keep my business afloat and buy Christmas for my kiddos. But we made it work!
I never realized how hard it is to have employees! I am the type that will become best friends with them and it is so hard to separate business and friendship. There were so many lessons in how to be a good boss and how to put my foot down when I needed to.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a local Utah Florist, we specialize in weddings, funerals, everyday arrangements, and dances. We are known for our unique, affordable, and beautiful flower arrangements. I am most proud of my arch pieces for my wedding setups.
A few years ago I was SO scared of these big extravagant setups. They were so intimidating and I never knew where to even start with them. But after education and practice, I did it!
I would say we are different than another florist because of my unique arrangements, I will never send the same piece out my door. Every single one is custom.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
I am always open to new customers and networking with photographers on collaborations. My biggest support is word of mouth and sharing on social! That’s where most of my customers come from.
