Rising Stars: Meet Brittany Riggs of Utah Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Riggs.

Hi Brittany, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I began my pet career as a high school intern for a dog breeder that supplies Police K9s. After graduation, I did kennel technician work for two years before I started my dog training company. During my college education, I spent over 200 hours observing the Utah Police K9 Training specifically for scent detection. I do continuing education by attending seminars and learning new sports and techniques.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have been lucky to have great people helping me but I have had some struggles. Since I am mostly self-taught, I had to rely on experience and learning from others through seminars and clubs.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in offering in-home dog training for pet obedience. I use a balanced approach for training and does not use ‘one training fits all’. I am known for giving detailed notes from each session to my clients and for my passion of dog training.I am certified through the AKC as a CGC Evaluator and Instructor. I am also a certified Judge for the Detection Dog Trials and currently compete with my dog, Archie, in scent work and tracking. I also have been practicing some side sports with Archie such as dock diving, rally and obedience. I absolutely love everything that has to do with a dog using its nose. I think dogs are amazing and I’m lucky to have Archie who picks up sports so quickly.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
For networking and finding a mentor, I recommend attending every event that you can. There are plenty of events that can be found on Facebook or through a local college. It may be scary but walk around and meet people. Ask them about themselves and make it a priority to remember their names and what they do for work.
