Today we’d like to introduce you to Brookelyn Tuckett.
Hi Brookelyn, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I have been a Licensed Cosmetologist for almost 6 years! From hair school, I knew I wanted to specialize in special occasions looks, including weddings, dances, photos, commercials, magazines, editorial, glam, etc. But hair school does not teach you how to be a freelance artist!
I spent a year at Great Clips, two and a half years at Sport Clips, a year at the Professional Beauty Supply chain Salon Centric, all while holding more than one job at a time to supplement my income. I, then, had a baby and decided to step away from my day job and fully commit to advertising and building my Bridal portfolio! In a year, I culminated enough marketing and network relationships to fully build a website, and in 2021.
I have had over 30 weddings, done lots of studio work, done commercial work, boutique sets, been published as an artist several times in different magazines, and have grown so much. I have done over 100 heads of hair and over 100 faces of makeup in 2021, and I’m so grateful to the professionals I’ve met along the way, and all my amazing clients.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t think being a freelance artist will ever be considered a smooth ride. From building my kit to creating a professional and inviting persona for my clients and guests, to learning the best way to communicate with my guests, learning what I am worth and what to charge, learning to be assertive, and being okay saying no.
Being a service provider is customer service on another level, and I’ve definitely dealt with my fair share of rude, entitled, and shady situations. But I’ve learned from each of those experiences and have picked up on some great advice and am a better, more efficient, service provider.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a licensed hair and makeup artist! I specialize in light, natural, accentuating full face makeup application, and boho, textured lived-in styling and updos! I am very proud of my growth as a stylist in the past year, starting my business and fully committing to making this my full-time job and income.
I feel like my experience at the Beauty Supply and becoming certified in every brand they carry, helps to set me apart from other stylists! I was able to learn in-depth details about ingredients, formulas, brands, styling tips, and tricks, which helped me quickly feel confident in my abilities to deliver in any situation!
I think my relationships with other professional vendors in my industry, and consistently driving myself to diversify my looks, techniques, and products, helps me stand apart from others in my industry.
How do you think about happiness?
My husband and my son make me happy! My comfort and happy place is just relaxing with my family. Feeling loved, wanted, needed, accepted, and validated.
Making my clients feel beautiful and confident makes me happy! As someone who struggled a lot with self-acceptance and confidence, I love sharing my light and helping these women and individuals feel bold, powerful, special, and pampered.
