Today we’d like to introduce you to Calla Tolbert.
Calla, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always been interested in the creative field since I was young and I couldn’t think of anything I’d rather have a career in than graphic design and photography. I received my BA in Graphic Design and Photography from Brigham Young University and while I was there, in my last year Navy Lion Design was born! I wanted to use any extra time I had to fill my creative bucket. I started off designing cards and art prints which did well for a while but I soon lost interest as the effort and time I was putting into it didn’t seem like it was worth it for the returns I was getting.
A few years down the road I pivoted, and I now have loyal brands who I do photography and graphic design for. I love what I do. I work my own schedule and have full control of my income and load of work which is wonderful!
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being your own boss can be a challenge when it comes to the “business” side of things that, as a creative, are not fun!
It’s also not easy to find new clients. Once you have them it’s easy to build that relationship, but initially finding a company whose product fits best with your skills and interests is difficult.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I do photography, graphic design, and manage all things social for a brand. I drive traffic, elevate their brand identity and ultimately increase revenue.
I specialize in food photography and I am most proud of my work ethic, ability to execute on campaigns and work under strict deadlines.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
When life gets challenging, keep going, pivot if needed but don’t stop pursuing your passions and dreams!
