Rising Stars: Meet Camera Meyer of Lehi

Today we’d like to introduce you to Camera Meyer.

Hi Camera, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
We are a yarn and tea shop that opened in 2021. I have been knitting and crocheting for 20 years and wanted to share my knowledge with others and encourage them on their own yarny path. With fiber arts, community is a big part of the learning process. Much of working with fiber is better taught in person where you can see how the yarn is manipulated to create beautiful fabric. Having someone who can look at what you are doing and help correct mistakes you might be making is critical for so many people. We teach classes, hold stitch night every week, host trunk shows for local dyers, have quarterly spin-ins and visit a fiber farm every fall. We also host tea parties year round with themed teas during the holidays, Witches Tea and Tinsel Tea. We have an in-house baker that makes the most amazing treats that have our customers coming back every year.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Opening during the pandemic was certainly an intimidating task but fiber artists certainly seemed ready by that time to get together again. We may be very introverted people but we need to squish yarn in person and connect with other artists. Because we are niche most of our customers find us, though it can be challenging to find customers that don’t know to look for us. We use social media for the most part, but word of mouth seems to be the best way to find people. The tea parties are a great way to help with the seasonal nature of the yarn business, allowing for cross marketing, people come in for a tea party and ending up signing up for a class or buying yarn, or they come for yarn and end up booking a tea party.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a wife an mom of 6. I wanted to have a career of my own when my children were all in school but was unsure what that would be. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that I spent most of my time knitting and I had never found a project I couldn’t accomplish so maybe that was where I could do something. I thought about working at another yarn store but there weren’t any in our area. I have found that I am a good teacher and I’m able to help both right and left handed crafters. I’m proud that many customers leave my classes happy and satisfied.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
This has built my confidence more than I thought it would. I feel more capable of doing whatever I need to and that I have an awesome team that will support me.
