Rising Stars: Meet Daniel Barclay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Barclay.

Hi Daniel, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
The gymnastics club was started back in 2015 by students who had a love for gymnastics when they were younger and wanted to continue to compete and learn new skills.

Since then the club has traveled to Nationals many times and even placed first place for men’s and women’s back in 2019. The club comprises men and women who range from elite to no previous experience where they come together to have fun doing gymnastics together!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We were not always a club sponsored by the University because of a lack of funding and interest. Only since last year were we able to become a Club Sport for Utah State.

There are also limited training facilities in the valley so that has also made it sometimes difficult. Another challenge is because gymnastics is not inherently a popular sport we do not always have many members and struggle hosting competitions here in Logan.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I work for the University as the women’s gymnastics team manager. I specialize in organization, facility maintenance, equipment and clothing inventory, and helping the team. I attend all practices, and meetings and travel with the team for competitions as well.

I am known for being efficient and effective and always having a solution to a problem. I am proud of my ability to connect with each girl on the team and also know their specific likes and dislikes and equipment preferences.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
The first coach who thought about hiring me was Erik Lewis, and the current coaching staff kept me.

They came in this past summer with a brand new staff to the program and allowed me to stay and help them navigate the new school and policies. Also, my family has been very supportive and watched the competitions as if I was competing myself.
