Rising Stars: Meet Emily Carruth Fuller of Draper

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Carruth Fuller.

Hi Emily Carruth, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My childhood imagination had me constantly jumping from one interest to the next, but I always came back to creating with my hands. At age 16 I discovered my passion for art through oil painting and have pursued a career in art ever since. I studied in several places, including Italy, and currently paint and teach in my private home studio. My favorite parts about being an artist are the people I meet and the stories I paint. I live in Utah with my husband Jordan and our three fun-loving sons.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I started this journey before having kids. As the family grew there was a constant need to readjust my work schedule and my approach to my business. For a while these adjustments seemed to be required every 3 months! As the primary parent I relied heavily on the help of family and was lucky to find phenomenal babysitters.

A more recent challenge is the use of AI and the ever changing need for for art in our modern world. The demand for an artist to make a custom image for a client is quickly subsiding as custom AI images are readily available to all. However, the human need to create and connect is growing stronger than ever. Humanity as a whole seems hungry for connection to ourselves and others. I see this need fulfilled in my students and in myself as we work to make something new, unique, and beautiful.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I make paintings for galleries, museums, and publications. My education in Italy, at BYU, and with acclaimed artist Jeff Hein deeply impact each piece. From an art scholarship in college to a select award through the Portrait Society of America, along with several published paintings, I feel deeply honored to share my work with those willing to pause and take a moment to reflect on it. My goal is to make art that adds meaning to the lives of those who view it. I am deeply grateful to clients who collect my paintings, making it possible for me to continue living this dream.

I teach privately in my home studio and am celebrating 16 years and counting. I am proud of my students, many of whom have gone on to receive scholarships, representation, and awards of their own!

Art transcends written or spoken language. Anyone, in any part of the world, can look at an image and get meaning from it. Well made art can outlive the artist who created it and I find great fulfillment in the idea that my work may have the ability to impact future generations, should I be among those lucky enough to leave an artistic impact. There is no better feeling than being able to share a piece with someone who connects with it.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Seek feedback. Maybe you are making a sketch every day. You might feel you are getting better! Or you might just be making the same mistakes over and over again. Get someone in your life who can give you help and direction. For me my mentors were my various school teachers. After college graduation I found it was up to me to reach out to fellow artists and ask for their advice. Humbly learn. Be open to suggestions. Art is a field you can continue to improve in for all the years of your life. There is always room to grow.

Show up to events. Attend gallery openings, artist gatherings, shows for artists you admire, and you will find that the local art community is strong, welcoming, and thriving. Utah has a spectacular art scene, and through my travels I have often heard, “what is happening in Utah?” as people recognize there is a power to the flourishing community we have here.
