Rising Stars: Meet Eric Holtrop of St George

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eric Holtrop.

Hi Eric , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started my medical career 25 years ago in the Lake Tahoe area providing critical care/internal medicine to the population between Tahoe and Sacramento. 5 years ago we decided to move to a location where we could ride our bikes more and enjoy being outside; St George is a pretty good fit. We started our concierge office 4 years ago after getting sick of dealing with insurance and the broken healthcare system in the united States. Our practice is simple; limit the volume (we see 90% less patients than a normal office) and provide unequaled care. We run an unlimited visit style of practice without insurance intrusion by changing it to a membership model. Now I can do all of the things we are taught in medical school without being told “you cant” by insurance. We provide worldwide care to a small group of patients, less than 400.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No; this is a scary proposition. I had to leverage $250,000 and come up with an exit strategy if this failed. Luckily my wife Helen gave me full support and the office rapidly expanded. We rapidly reached capacity and have a stable turnover rate. We have stopped most advertising and word of mouth drives us now.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Graduated biology from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Graduated medical school with Honors, St Georges school of medicine. Trained at UTMB Galveston in Internal Medicine with an emphasis on critical care/life support. I ran the intensive care unit for years and was consistently one of the best performing physicians in Northern Californian.

I am proud professionally of being ranked “the best student ever” in my University of Maryland medical school and also being only one of 125 physicians worldwide of passing the inaugural Hospital Medicine board certification.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Windsurfing in the Colombia river gorge in 30 knot winds with 10 foot waves; scary and breathtaking at the same time. Close second is sailing a 40 foot sailboat all over the Pacific with my Dad.
