Rising Stars: Meet Heidi Firth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heidi Firth.

Hi Heidi, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Floral design was something I learned from my mother when I was a child. It has always been in my back pocket of skills. As I got older, I went into corporate finance with no thought to flowers or design. Occasionally I would create a centerpiece or arrangement and was instantly reminded of my love for floral design. It wasn’t until I became a mother and decided to stay at home with them that I quickly recognized my desire to create and looked for an outlet. I started sharpening the skills I once had and jumped in with both feet! I started HF FLORAL DESIGN in 2015 and haven’t looked back.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In 2015 Instagram was the perfect place to showcase my floral content. At that time there were far less up and coming floral designers on the platform. In addition to IG, I made a small investment to be featured on Wedding Wire + The Knot. Between those 3 platforms, I gained my first clients. Since then, I have solely relied on word of mouth for referrals. I like that I can hand pick my clients who share the same floral vision as I do! Suffice it to say, it has been a steady and mostly smooth road 🙏

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in wedding florals. I do mostly intimate small/medium-sized weddings + events. I have a distinct garden style aesthetic with a bit of a modern flare. I’m most proud of my reviews on various platforms and the referrals I get from happy prior clients.

Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
By nature, I am not a big risk-taker. I, however; recognize that big rewards can come to those who take risks. Becoming a small business owner initially felt scary. The risk wasn’t monetary- as it didn’t require a huge financial infusion- it was the fear of clients not liking my work and my style. I quickly realized that those who sought me out did so because they specifically liked my work. I saved my profits and slowly invested in floral fridges, vases, and other permanent inventory. I guess my biggest obstacle was my ego and I’m so glad I had enough confidence to take to risk to show the world my floral design.
