Rising Stars: Meet Jordan Howa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Howa.

Hi Jordan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I began cutting hair in 2010 after touring and tech for a punk band for several years before that. They were no longer touring for a while so I needed to change my career out of necessity! So I decided to go to Paul Mitchell the School – Provo. Fast forward to 2012, I began focusing on barbering more, and then I realized there was a massive gap in the men’s shaving product and beard care segment. I was also tired of using overpriced and overhyped products so that’s when I decided to create my own. Beehive Grooming & Co. I had worked for a couple of amazing Salons earlier in my career but knew that I had always wanted my own. In 2017 I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to build out my first barbershop in American Fork.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think one of the biggest obstacles early on was the fact that no one that I knew had ever created their own products like that before. I had no clue where to even begin other than buying raw ingredients and beginning the trial and error process until something stuck. That took quite a bit of time and money.

In 2020, the building where my shop was located in American Fork was sold and I had to relocate. In the midst of the pandemic, I was already scared like most people were of the unknown, my guests were canceling appointments left and right, sales were dropping slowly and I was noticing supply chain issues with bottles and other ingredients. Thankfully I found my new location in Pleasant Grove and the business has been thriving!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’ve specialized in men’s grooming and barbering for the majority of my career so I focus on hair cutting, beard trims, and straight razor shaves. What I’m known for and what sets me apart is the fact that I can easily communicate with my guests to not only provide the best technical service for them, but can also allow me to connect with them on many levels which shows them that they are safe and understood. The majority of my guest have been coming to me every 2 to 4 weeks, year after year and I think that’s partly why.

With knowing the ins and outs of these guys’ lives from work stress to challenges at home and everything in between, I couldn’t be more grateful for them choosing my shop, sacrificing their valuable time and spending their hard-earned money here.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck is created. The DIY mindset is something I’ve always appreciated and live by. I grew up playing drums in punk bands in a small coal-mining town in central Utah with less than 2,000 people living in it. We had to make the flyers, stickers, record the music, print the CDs, and book the shows. And I loved every second of it. A lot of my family and dear friends still live there, but I always knew the opportunities and the dreams I had didn’t. When I graduated high school I never really looked back, no one else that I knew had ever pursued the same path and so I had to navigate and create pathways as I went, eventually leading to where I am now.
