Rising Stars: Meet Kamee Cox

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kamee Cox.

Hi Kamee, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Photography was always something I found joy in as a little girl. Taking photos with my friends every time we got together. I really started taking a more “professional” take on it when my older sister got married. She let me take some bridal photos of her. From then I just kept taking any opportunity I could get to learn and practice. I shot my friend’s wedding right after graduating high school and then onto my sister’s senior photos and things in between.

After I was married and moved to Arizona is when I truly found a place in the professional photography world. I was blessed with amazing people around me that encouraged me and allowed me to photograph them! I was then published in Hullafrog magazine while living in Arizona and that truly helped my business.

After about 3 years in Arizona, we made the move to Utah for my husband’s work and I continued on here and grew more than I would ever imagined. Utah is not an easy place to be a photographer. There are so many photographers here and I knew I would need to build a brand new clientele here. Once again, I was blessed with an amazing neighborhood, family, and friends who supported me here!

When covid hit, I decided to take on my neighborhood and give back to them by doing family front porch photos! A neighbor of mine drove me from house to house and I was able to do what I love for so many people that I love!

Photography for me is not only a job but a hobby! You will almost always find me taking photos everywhere and anywhere! I love doing it! It brings me so much joy to give others something to hang on their walls that makes them happy!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I am the mother of four kids now! All under the age of 8! Pregnancy was not my friend and I always struggled through those 9 months. So each kid came with hardship and a slowdown in my business and how much I could take on.

I then experienced a very hard time just 3 years ago. I ended up in a very depressed and anxious state. It was all new to me. During that time, I took a step back from anything that wasn’t necessary for my survival and my children being taken care of.

Everything else had to take the back burner, including photography.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I love all forms of photography, but HUMAN BEINGS are where it’s at! I love to photograph people. I think there is beauty in each and every one of us and I love to showcase that! I take photos of families, weddings, engagements, formals, back-to-school photos, business headshots, senior sessions, and more.

I would say I definitely do more families than anything and I always have the best families behind my lens! so grateful for the people I get to meet along the way.

I feel what sets me apart from others is that I am genuine. I am light-hearted, kind, and easygoing! I am good at shifting if needed. Kids aren’t going to last a full session? We can get it done in a quicker time and still get you the photos you want. Want more of an experience with a slower pace to enjoy the time? We can do that too!

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
This city is amazing and specifically my neighborhood! I have never felt more supported. They are always the first to book my mini-sessions and they are always sharing their love for their photos which means the world to me! I feel we have lots of open locations and easy-to-get ones for simple photo sessions if people don’t like to travel.

Sometimes this city can be a hard place to navigate price points. I find myself at the best price point possible to still earn money myself and to make it affordable for clients! It’s not all about the money for me, but I also do not want to ruin the industry by pricing myself too low!

I work hard and believe my work is worth my price point! Sometimes I get a lot of people around here that disagree that photos should cost more than $50 and that’s where we have to agree to disagree!
