Rising Stars: Meet Karey White and Savannah Ackley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karey White and Savannah Ackley.

Hi Karey and Savannah, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
The Dessert Studio was established in September 2018 by Karey White and her daughter, Savannah Ackley. Karey had done wedding cakes when her children were young but had stopped when they became teenagers and life got busy with sports and music.

After coming home from a service mission to the Dominican Republic, Savannah wanted to learn the art of cake making from Karey and shortly thereafter they converted the basement to a state-licensed bakery and The Dessert Studio was formed.

They specialize in luxury buttercream cakes and beautiful desserts, many of which come from family recipes. Since the beginning, Karey’s other daughter, Veronica, has joined the team handling administrative work.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The Dessert Studio has been a rewarding journey, but not without its challenges. One unpleasant challenge was the COVID pandemic and everything related to that. We had many couples have to cancel or reschedule. It was difficult to know day to day what was going to happen.

We were very grateful the bakery was in our home and didn’t have the overhead of a storefront. A more pleasant challenge has been that Savannah is almost due to deliver her second baby since The Dessert Studio began.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
The Dessert Studio strives to provide delicious and artistic cakes. It is our priority to deliver a beautiful centerpiece for our customers’ special day, but ultimately cake is a dessert and we want it to taste amazing.

We offer more than 20 different cake flavors and fillings allowing clients to customize their cake to their individual preferences. We are artists specializing in buttercream cake painting and realistic buttercream flowers that are often mistaken for the real thing.

The cake is our canvas and we love creating art.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
We could not do this without the support of our husbands and families. They are patient with our long bakery days and evening and weekend deliveries.

We are so grateful for them! We are also grateful for our wonderful clients who trust us with the special days in their lives.
