Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Ballard.
Hi Kelly, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
After all my kids were in school together, I wondered “what I wanted to do” when I grew up. I had always wanted to learn power tools, and so on my 40th birthday, I asked my husband to teach me the one I was most afraid of…the nail gun. After that day, I decided to build a project a week for one year and document my progress on Instagram. Nine years later it has became not only my hobby but a full time career making content for brands and doing what I love!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Absolutely not! I had to learn how to take photos, edit videos, and learn what a hashtag was. When I started, stories was brand new and so terrifying. But I set aside a few hours each week to learn these skills by watching Youtube videos and taking classes. Social media is constantly changing and so keeping up can get exhausting, but I just love this whole journey!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I have a degree in Social Work and this has helped in my ability to communicate better on my social channels and work with others. But my career as a content creator is all self taught and learned along the way from many mistakes and mishaps. I have grown so much in my skill set as as a DIYer over the years and I love this. But something I was not expecting was learning to love growing a business. Over the years I have worked with hundreds of brands and had to learn the art of pitching and negotiating to help with this. I am known for my simple DIY projects, my empty nester travels, and our family content. I am so proud of showcasing a skill for other women to learn from and use in their daily life. My favorite is when I get a DM from someone telling me they picked up a tool for the first time because of my page!
