Rising Stars: Meet Kyle Overturf

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyle Overturf.

Hi Kyle, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
In 2018, I was hired as the General Manager of Blue Trail Range. The owner had passed away unexpectedly in August of 2017, and his wife inherited the business. She was looking for a general manager and I was thinking about retiring. I was the Colonel of Connecticut’s Environmental Conservation Police and had been working for that agency for 32 years. She told me that she was looking for a general manager and she offered me the position. I started here in June 2018.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
While I spent the majority of my time in my previous career in a supervisor and managerial role, I had no business experience so there was a steep learning curve on my part. The owner was extremely supportive and we worked hard to develop a business plan that included significant capital improvements to the facility.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As the general manager, I am responsible for the day-to-day operations of the facility. Blue Trail Range is a large outdoor shooting range, retail firearms store and training facility. Developing relationships within the industry has been a significant benefit to the business. We have recognized the need to develop a diverse clientele and have done that through our training programs. We have also become engaged in the local business community.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I credit my success in my previous occupation to having the ability to work and learn from some of the best leaders in conservation law enforcement. I have tried to do the same in this position by joining local business organizations and going to training opportunities provided by industry organizations. You have to recognize and seek out successful leaders in your field and not be hesitant to ask for their advice.
