Today we’d like to introduce you to Lexx Larsen
Hi Lexx, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m Lexx, I am a Mexican-American second generation tattoo artist. I was raised in Magna, UT by my grandfather who was a retired tattoo artist. I’ve always loved art and was always encouraged to keep creating by everyone around me.
I started my first apprenticeship in 2019 and left due to hazing. I moved to Philadelphia where I kept pursuing tattooing and eventually moved back to Utah in 2022 as a full fledged artist.
Tattooing hasn’t been easy, but I’ve been lucky enough to be surrounded by incredible people who constantly lift me up when I’m feeling down. I’m also grateful to my husband who believes in me more than I believe in myself.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Tattooing hasn’t been an easy road, especially as a woman and a person of color. This is predominantly a male-dominated industry and there have been times I haven’t been taken seriously as an artist just for being a woman. I’ve also had to deal with a lot of harassment from other artists in this space.
At first it made me upset, but I realized that trying to people please in an artistic industry is a great way to lose your voice. Once I let go of others expectations of me, and solidified my expectations of myself Ive been able to find myself a lot more.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a Fineline and neo-traditional artist. Although I’m mostly known for Fineline tattoo art, my favorite kind of tattoo art to create is neo-traditional. Neo-traditional is a tattoo style inspired by the Art Nouveau movement, and my favorite artist Alphonse Mucha was the face of that movement.
I am most proud of my resilience in this industry. There have been so many times I’ve wanted to give up, but I pushed through and challenged myself instead. This push has contribited to me creating my best work, and I see myself getting better with each tattoo.
I also pride myself in price transparency with my clients. Tattooing feels like an enigma, and I want to take the guessing out of it so my clients are more comfortable during the tattoo. They’ll always know how much they’ll pay before the ink hits their skin, so they aren’t focused on price shock during the tattoo and can relax more.
What are your plans for the future?
I’m excited to incorporate my culture into tattooing and create a spiritual experience in tattooing through cuanderismo. Cuanderismo is a form of Mexican shamanism where we use natural remedies and rituals to cleans the spirit and heal the body.
My plan is to create a spiritual experience within tattooing where we go over your journey, cleans your body and spirit, and then create the tattoo that is both a blessing and an ode to your journey in life.
I want tattooing to be more than just an exchange of services, I want it to be a life changing experience for the person getting tattooed.
