Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Valencia Wilson
Hi Megan, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I first fell in love with design in high school while taking a class called Interior Design 101. This was a whole new world of beautifully crafted rooms that were tidy and full of light and relaxation. This was very foreign to me especially being a kid who struggled to keep my room clean. I didn’t realize till later down the road that you could actually go to school to study design. Once I figured that out, I knew that, that’s what I wanted to do. In the process of getting my Interior Design degree I found Feng Shui as an elective course. I was so intrigued by the course description that I knew I needed to take it. Little did I know that this class would change my life. It changed the way I saw the world and saw design. After I completed the Feng Shui course at school, I continued my Feng Shui education and then became certified as a Feng Shui practitioner. I knew that I wanted to use and incorporate Feng Shui into what ever was next for me in my career as an interior designer.
A few years later I decided to create my own business not really knowing how but knowing I wanted to create a business that merged my love for interior design and Feng Shui. Feng Shui for me gave meaning to being an interior designer, it gave it more significance and more awareness to what I was creating for other people. For me it wasn’t enough to just pick out pretty fabrics, paint colors and cohesive furniture, not to negate this importance, but I wanted more. Feng Shui is the tool I use to create more meaning. I get to know my clients fundamentally who they are before we even get started on a project. I use Feng Shui tools to dive deep into people’s eastern astrology, we explore together and I get to learn what inspires and fuels them and what is needed to create their optimal space, be it an office a restaurant or someone’s home. This avenue of design brings so much fulfillment to my career, and many opportunities to share the gift of Feng Shui with those I meet.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Pretty soon after high school I decided to get married, drop out of collage and start on a family right away. This path didn’t make it easy for me to get through school. After having my first two children I decided to go back to school and study design. It took me 7-1/2 years to get through my interior design degree, not because it was difficult but because my husband and I were raising our two small daughters while my husband was also going to school and working a full time job, so night classes and some summers off worked best with my growing family’s schedule. Once I graduated, I ended up working for multiple firms gaining experience, making connections in the industry and learning so much about what I wanted for my life, what I wanted my career to be, and most importantly learning what I valued most, my time. I think that has been the biggest struggle, learning about myself in this journey of life. Listening to my gut and trusting.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As a Feng Shui interior designer I use many different schools of Feng Shui to analyze buildings, and examine how they are placed upon the land. Assessing if the Chi(energy) is getting to their building or is it blocked or stagnant. I also look at how the energy moves inside a space by using the Feng Shui compass, and one of my favorite tools is using my client’s eastern astrology 4 pillar natal chart. This chart gives me a good idea of what that person needs and doesn’t need energetically from their space. The 4 pillar chart reveals the client’s elemental energies such as; Fire, Earth, Metal, Water, Wood and also what their zodiac animals are and many other valuable insights that help people understand themselves. This is a key component in creating a space that not only looks beautiful but feels beautiful. Even people who don’t have a project but are on a path of self exploration can benefit from their 4 pillar chart information, it really is a great way to get to know yourself which I think everyone can benefit from.
I love helping businesses and home owners from the perspective of both of these lenses, interior designer and Feng Shui practitioner, mixing the best of both worlds. I think thats what sets me apart form other interior designers, I approach design differently. I look at the whole package of the person who is coming to me for help. Of course I listen to what my client wants esthetically from their space, and usually this aligns with what they need energetically. But starting with self awareness and self discovery through Feng Shui takes the design and design process to a whole new level.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
One of my favorite apps is, The Pattern, it’s a great resource for your western astrology. I absolutely love reading, one of my favorite books is, The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. I’m always looking for ways to improve my fitness and longevity and stay healthy. I enjoy the podcast, What’s the Juice, with Olivia Amitrano, she has great insight on this topic.
