Rising Stars: Meet Mysha Bolen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mysha Bolen.

Hi Mysha, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I am a DIY interior designer as I like to call myself, but my degree is in fashion design. After a career in direct sales, I quit my job to stay at home with my kiddos. I found myself still searching for a creative outlet and turned to the walls of my own home. I have always loved art, and basically all aspects of the creative process, so I took the principles I had learned at fashion school and started applying them to my home.

I found that I loved interior design, and renovated every home I had before we bought our 3rd home in Utah. We bought a home that we knew needed updating and I told my hubby that I wanted to learn how to create the designs and visions I had in my head, not hire a contractor. That’s when power tools entered my life. A little at a time, I took on harder and harder projects. I was learning so much and started sharing my work on Instagram. At the time I was just doing it as a hobby.

A couple of years in, I found out that people were making full-blown careers by sharing their work and passions on Instagram. That’s when everything changed! I have now been on the “gram” for 6 years and making an income doing what I love and sharing the process with my audience. I absolutely love being able to share a project from concept design all the way through construction and finishing with styling all by myself.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Building a business is never completely smooth. I didn’t make any money for the first 3 years of doing this job.

Figuring out strategies to grow is also a big challenge. In the last 3 years, however, I have doubled my income each year. I have had exponential growth.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I remodel, renovate, and transform spaces, mostly in my own home, but occasionally at my sister’s house or off-site locations. I share how to do this by breaking everything down into a step-by-step tutorial both on my blog and on Instagram.

I know there are a lot of designers out there and a lot of DIYers, but I like to think that the combo of both interior designer and DIYer is more of a rarity.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Power tools are not as intimidating as we make them out to be. With a few skills and time, we can create anything.
