Rising Stars: Meet Rebeca Granillo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebeca Granillo.

Hi Rebeca, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I began to fly fishing almost 12 years ago at the age of 21. I had never fished before learning to fly fish but I did grow up hiking so I was very excited to revisit the trail systems I knew well but this time with a rod, a few flies, and tools at hand. I loved learning the trails again from a whole new perspective. What started out as a hobby has turned into a passion and a form of making a living that I hope to pass along to my children.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Fly fishing is full of obstacles. Sometimes everything clicks and you’re catching so many fish you lose count while other times you return to the same spot, with the same tackle, at the same time as the day before and have little to no success. At first one could see how this might be frustrating but it doesn’t take long to recognize that although you did not catch a fish your outing is still very much successful. The feeling of the water rushing on your ankles, the birds, the solitude, the bad casts – the good casts, the way it all comes together and takes you away from reality for a brief amount of time is what makes any day on the water successful. The act of actually catching a fish is just a bonus.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a Fly Fishing Instructor, I get the opportunity to teach others the techniques and applications that lead them to a better approach to their next fish. We cover everything from gear, casting, entomology, selecting the right tackle, the appropriate approach and so much more! I really enjoy sharing my knowledge with those looking to learn more about this hobby and I have made it very easy to do so. All gear is provided with your fee, all you have to do is show up and be open to learning. That’s it! Your experience with me on the water will leave you wanting more and wondering why you didn’t start fly fishing sooner!

What do you think about luck?
When dealing with Nature you are not always in control – especially in fishing. Call it bad luck or call it good luck, whichever you get is and should be expecting while on the water. I personally enjoy how even the most skilled fisherman can get outfished by an amateur. Sure there are a lot of additional techniques that the skilled angler can apply that the amateur does not know of yet but in the end, the fish decides to take or not take the tackle regardless of who the fisherman is on the other end – leveling the playing field.
