Today we’d like to introduce you to Sage Sommer.
Sage, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I got my first set of acrylics when I was 9 years old, French Tips with a little spider on each ring finger. I went to school the next day feeling so beautiful and confident, I felt like I could take on anything. That is one of the reasons I got into being a nail technician. I wanted to give that feeling to everyone who sat down in my chair. A good set of nails can do a lot for your self-esteem.
I remember in middle school I would do my older sister’s nails every Sunday with what I could find. Bobby pins, Pencils, makeup sponges. You name it. I would create Snowman and Toad from Mario with nail polishes I could find around the house. I even remember using my mom’s credit card to buy a set of dotting tools from Amazon…
Needless to say, I was grounded for a week. In 2020, I was going to college for Interior design and then covid hit. So I dropped out and was just working full-time. I have loved drawing, painting, and doodling ever since I was little. I needed to express my creativity somehow and one day while being bored out of my mind from quarantining I was on my phone and saw a video of simple nail art you can do from home, so I said what the heck and I once again grabbed my bobby pins and pencils and painted away.
Within the next year, I registered in the nail technician program at Cameo College of Essential Beauty. I worked endlessly and picked up any extra hours I could while still working full-time. Four months later, I graduated with the passing scores I needed from the state as well as school.
Then in July of 2022, I opened up my small business Sages Nails, and offered my creativity and talent to the world. I have learned and have grown so much as a nail tech within the last couple of years. I have so many people to thank for the love and support they gave me while I went on this journey. I have loved all the designs my clients come in with and all the smiles they leave with.
I am currently located in Lemons Esthetics in South Jordan UT and am excited to continue to grow and perfect my craft.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course, there were and still are bumps in the road. Upon opening up my own business I would constantly question my skills and though I couldn’t do it my amazing family pushed me to do what I love and was with me every step of the way.
It is also a struggle running a business by yourself not only are you the boss but you are the content creator, finance manager, janitor, and inventory manager. It can be super tough to juggle all those things at once but the smiles I get to see and the stories I get to hear from my clients make it 100% worth it.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a nail technician specializing in hand-painted art, Luminary, Gel-X, and Acrylics. I would say I am known for my hand-painted art and customer service. I am determined to make you visit exactly as you imagined. There was a set I where the client had come in with her own nail art she drew up on her iPad.
Each finger had a different Pokémon character on it and I was honored that she trusted me enough to recreate her art. Needless to say, it turned out amazing and she was thrilled with the results.
Favorite set I have done to this day. I focus on quality verse quantity, making sure my clients are happy with the set they are walking out with I will not be satisfied until my client is happy with her nails.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I would like to give my thanks to many people starting with my family, while I was in school they came into to salon to help me practice the services I would be giving when I got into the real world and they were there every step of the way
Also, my mentor at Cameo College, Candice, was the best teacher you could ask for. She pushed us so hard and wanted each of her students to succeed while also filling us with confidence and self-esteem.
And of course, I wouldn’t be here without my clients. They are the lifeblood of my small business and I am eternally grateful for each and every one of them.
