Rising Stars: Meet Sam Reed of Provo, UT

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Reed

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
When I was little, I wanted to be a paleontologist—this is well-documented in all my childhood notebooks filled with drawings of dinosaurs. I lost interest in paleontology as a career, but my interest in drawing stuck with me. There is always something magical about capturing something once only in the mind and giving it life on paper. For a while, I pursued the idea of illustration until I found design at a lecture by the late great Milton Glasier. I don’t remember what he said, but the decision was made for me. I wanted to do what he did.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No one’s path is smooth, but I’ve enjoyed the ride. So far, I’ve worked at agencies, large in-house teams, and tiny startups. It’s been nice to experience a variety of work environments. I’ve realized I do my best work in small, collaborative teams and prefer agency work. I love that every day is different, and there are always new problems to solve.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I love to be involved in a bit of everything. My current work at Bridger has given me that balance. While my favorite work is identity design and branding, I also love that I get to spend time on UX.UI Projects as well. All the drawing I did growing up has made its way into my design work. I love to incorporate illustration elements into my work. I think my sweet spot is creating visuals that are somewhere between iconography and illustration. I love seeing how simple I can make a visual idea without losing its essence or effectiveness.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Being kind to the people you work with and solving problems for clients. I’m happy when I can offer something of value to my coworkers and clients. I like to see people and organizations with real values succeed. If I can be a small part of that story, that’s good enough for me.
