Today we’d like to introduce you to Shay Willis.
Hi Shay, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My mom was a photographer before I was. In high school I borrowed her camera to take pictures of my friends. Then my friends friends wanted pictures and then their friends friends wanted pictures. I did my first wedding in 2018 when I was 17 years old. I quit my full-time job a couple years ago and I haven’t looked back.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The photography business is really inconsistent. Being unsure of how you’re gonna pay rent in certain winter months is always interesting. Impostor syndrome is very real. Comparison feels like quicksand. I got my camera stolen when I was 22. That was really hard.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an Utah photographer that specializes in weddings, couples portraits. I cried myself in my edgy/timeless style. I love to be a little bit moody while still keeping true to color tones. I love being my clients biggest fan and producing heirloom quality images.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Find a community. I found my best friends in this industry and they changed my life.
