Today we’d like to introduce you to Silvana Roybal
Silvana , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I moved to the United States years ago from Mexico City. I met my amazing husband and then we got married. We have two kids. Thiago who is 9 years old and Mia who is 6 years old. At the age of 1 my son regressed into Autism. He is nonverbal. Ever since I had kids I have taken so many pictures of them, just like any other mom but after my son got diagnosed, taking pictures meant something else. Taking pictures of him meant showing the things he felt, showing the things he liked, he enjoyed, showing autism, etc.. without saying anything. Just like the saying goes “a picture is worth a thousand words” only my child can’t actually say any words, so I try to say them through my pictures of him. So my husband got me a “nice” camera and I started taking lots of pictures of everything and everyone. I have been doing it for 4 years now and I am absolutely obsessed with it. I consider myself a candid photographer because I don’t like to just look at photos, I love feeling them.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been a very bumpy road haha. I was raised by the strongest single mother. Moved to a completely different country ( which I’m extremely thankful for). But my son’s diagnosis has been the hardest for us for sure. Autism is a big deal and it completely changes your life. There has been many many lessons along the way! But we are learning so much and changing our life for the better!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I take photos mostly of Families, high school seniors, couples and some weddings but My most favorite session to photograph is Families! Extended or Immediate! I love showing the love they have for each other in every single photo! I love showing their personalities through my photos. I want everyone but especially moms to look back at the photos and remember their children just like they were when they were that young. Like Ive said before I specialize in candid photography. There is so much great talent around me so many talented photographers, I really wouldn’t know for sure what sets me apart but I do know that I put so much love into my art.
I was raised in a different culture than most so I see a lot of things through different eyes. Even though I feel so blessed I get to live in Utah, I love my culture and my clients know this. I love the fact that I was born in Mexico City. I think the fact that I don’t have any family here besides my mom and sister sets me apart because I know how important family is and those photos you get to take with family are so priceless.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
oh man! I have learned so much! Ive learned and still learning about patience. I have learned to trust my journey. I have learned to trust that whatever is supposed to happen its going to happen. I have learned to trust in Gods plan for me. And that no matter what happens he’s got me!
