Rising Stars: Meet Steven Pellissier

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steven Pellissier.

Steven, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
It all started here in Los Angeles. About 2006, Had a full-time day job 40 hours a week. Enrolled in beauty school and went to school at night after my day job.

Graduated in 2009 and got my license. Started part-time weekends at a salon in West Hollywood and slowly transitioned out of my day job. After 2 years of gaining experience and clients at that salon, I decided to go it on my own and go rent a station and create a business name.

That was 2011 and have only worked for me since then. So 11 years now. I made my own salon in 2013 and created Steven Mata Hair Salon.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Surprisingly, it’s been pretty easy.

It’s been easy because I love doing what I do and I’m very good at what I do. I do all aspects of hair and also makeup. I’m not like some people who can only do certain things and not others. People who only do haircuts or just men or just color. I do everything.

I’m always good at upselling and suggesting the addition of something if I see customers need something like a color, highlights, or haircut.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in both men’s and women’s services. Haircolor, haircut, highlights, keratin treatments, hair styling, and makeup. Extensions.

Since I do both hairstyling and makeup, I can get hired for special events, weddings, and photoshoots. I can do this work at the salon or travel out to an event or wedding. I can go out on location for a photoshoot as I’ve worked on many of those. I’m not just limited to the salon.

If I’m on a photoshoot I can come up with the looks for the fashion or clothes being used. I can also help to be the wardrobe stylist. I’ve been lucky enough to work on red carpet looks, Things I never thought I would have the privilege to work on. I’ve worked on people I’ve then got to see up on the screen.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Yes, the biggest risk in my work was when I first started. I had my full-time job then slowly transitioned to my salon work. The first salon was on weekends only.

Then my day job went to only 4 days a week. Then to only 3 days per week. Then, I had to let go. Quit my day job and decide I could live on hairstyling alone. Then after 2 years at my first salon to quit and say, “you know what I’m gonna rent a chair. Be on my own”.

I gave myself 6 months to see if I could make it on my own. Never looked back. Still doing it. Then I said, “you know what? I’ll make my own salon”! Did that.
