Today we’d like to introduce you to Troy Larson
Hi Troy, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
For as long as I can remember, I’ve enjoyed making various types of art but for the last 20 years I put my focus toward special effects and creature creation for films, theme parks as well as private collectors. When I first started this path, I primary did effects makeup and prosthetics for the local haunts. I also began making replica masks, costume pieces and props from various pop-culture properties(Star Wars, Ghostbusters, Indiana Jones,etc.). I was hired as shop foreman at Evermore Park where I managed and educated employees as well as created foam latex pullover masks, prosthetics, puppets, animatronics and large-scale creature suits. I later ran my own creature shop and made creature performance costumes, scenic props, makeup appliances and blood effects for films. The most notable being V/H/S :99 and Deadstream. Currently I own and operate a special effects educational museum called Unworldly Exhibit where I as well as other artists showcase pieces we’ve created for various projects as well as teach workshops for those who would like to learn this type of art.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
For me, forging a path in special effects as a carrer was a long and bumpy road. There weren’t resources to learn how to do most of the techniques required and fewer ways to network and self-promote to get hired to produce pieces. It took me several years of personal investment to build an adequate portfolio that displays a competency in the many facets of the art.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I primarily create creatures for film, tv, theme parks and private consumers. I am primarily known online for my Star Wars masks but I am the most proud of the dragon puppets I made for Evermore Park because it’s a type of puppetry that is seldom done by anyone in the industry
Any big plans?
I am always looking to the future to expand the size of my workshop to be able to accommodate larger projects as well as to be able to work with more productions and new artists.
