We’re looking forward to introducing you to Marcus Chambers. Check out our conversation below.
Good morning Marcus, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
There’s something truly magical about fly fishing. But it’s not just about the fish; it’s about the wonders of Mother Nature surrounding you. What lies around the next bend? You can’t help but explore, discovering new and breathtaking places that feed your adventurous spirit.
You start your day at 8:00 AM, and in the blink of an eye, it’s 6:00 PM. Time slips away as you immerse yourself in this blissful escape, and reluctantly, you make your way back to the truck, already reminiscing about the day’s adventures. Whether you’re out with your buddies or sharing the experience with your significant other, fly fishing is an incredible stress reliever. There’s nothing quite like the joy of netting a fish, followed by laughter, hugs, and high fives—all moments that turn a simple day into an unforgettable memory.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Marcus Chambers, and I am one of the founders of a fly fishing apparel company called Roam and Reel. We established this company to inspire people to step out of their comfort zones and travel while fly fishing. My great friend Lamont Carter and I believe that fly fishing is not just about pursuing the fish; it’s about the adventure you’re on, the people you’re with, and the memories you make along the way. Many anglers fish the same stretch of river week after week, missing out on opportunities to explore and expand their fishing skills.
Since our inception, we’ve built an incredible pro staff, featuring members like John Haddock, JJ Miller, Allan Gallegos, and Mike Berlint. Our guides are spread across the West, leading trips on rivers ranging from the San Juan in New Mexico to the Beaverhead in Montana. We even offer small stream trips in Southern Utah!
In addition, we’ve launched a YouTube channel where you can follow our adventures and be inspired to embark on your own.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
I would say my father had the most significant impact on how I see myself. He gave me more than just my eye color; he introduced me to the world of fly fishing and supported me in pursuing my dreams. He always held me to a standard he knew I was capable of, never allowing me to settle for anything less than my best.
After losing him this past December, I faced my first Father’s Day without him. While I often spent Mother’s Days on the soccer field, my Father’s Days were usually spent on a stream with him, often in the beautiful Gila Wilderness of southern New Mexico. This year, I was fortunate that my wife and daughter helped me keep that tradition alive by taking me fishing in the Uintas National Forest.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
I have never been a fan of losing; in fact, I absolutely hate it. I dislike the feeling of wondering if I could have done more, prepared better, or what went wrong. Each loss teaches me valuable lessons about what to do differently next time. This aversion to losing drives me to work harder, ensuring I never have to experience that feeling again. I commit myself to better preparation, learning new techniques, and conducting thorough research to achieve a positive outcome in the future. Avoiding loss takes significant effort and determination, and it certainly isn’t for the faint of heart.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
Absolutely! I would say that what you see is 100% what you get. I’m not one to sugarcoat things; in fact, my wife often tells me that I need to have a filter and that I sometimes say more than I should. But I believe in being straightforward and genuine. My perspective is simple: if you don’t want the truth, then don’t ask me. If I care about you, I’m not going to lie to you. I think authenticity is essential in relationships, and I strive to be honest, even when the truth might be difficult to hear. It’s important to me that people know who I really am, without pretense or facade.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
It’s not just about a specific story; it’s truly about how I hope to be remembered. I envision a core group of my friends—my brothers—reflecting on our time together and saying, “When I needed him, he was there! No questions asked, no conflict too big!” That unwavering support is something I strive to offer to those I care about, and I want them to remember me for my loyalty and dependability.
I try to live by the golden rule: treat others how you want to be treated. This principle guides my interactions and decisions, shaping the way I approach relationships. I also aim to instill this same value in my daughter, teaching her the importance of kindness, empathy, and being there for others.
Ultimately, I hope to be remembered as a good friend, a loving husband, and a devoted father. I want my legacy to reflect the positive impact I had on the lives of those around me, showing that I valued relationships and made a difference in the lives of my loved ones. My hope is that when people think of me, they remember the moments we shared, the laughter, the support, and the love that defined our connections.
