Story & Lesson Highlights with Rachel Hurmence of Salt Lake City

We recently had the chance to connect with Rachel Hurmence and have shared our conversation below.

Rachel, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
Honestly, personal training. For the longest time I told myself I wasn’t disciplined enough for it, or that it “wasn’t my vibe.” But the more I’ve grown, the more obvious it’s become that this is something I’m actually being called into. Not from a place of forcing myself, but from a place of alignment. It feels like the next evolution of how I’m meant to support women and it’s wild to realize I’m stepping into something I once thought I could never do. It feels silly now that I thought that about myself.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Rachel, a board-certified functional medicine and holistic health coach. I run Rachel Claire Functional Health, where I help women heal their hormones, gut, thyroid, and metabolism using root-cause, lab-based, and personalized support. My work blends the science of functional medicine with the art of sustainable coaching so we’re not just treating symptoms, we’re rebuilding mindsets, lifestyle, and beliefs. What makes this so personal and special to me is that I’ve been the woman sitting in the doctor’s office being told “you’re fine” when I felt anything but. Now I partner with women all over the country to help them understand their bodies, trust their intuition, and finally feel like themselves again.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
Two types of relationships come to mind. First: a few ex-boyfriends who, for whatever reason had this infinite belief and trust in me. They saw strengths and capabilities in me that I couldn’t yet see in myself and that kind of reflection is powerful. It shifted the way I viewed my own potential.

Second: mentors in business. I’ve been lucky to meet a handful of people who’ve offered so much genuine praise, encouragement, and belief in my work that it’s helped me tune out the self-doubt. Their words have shaped not just how I see myself, but how I show up in my business with confidence and clarity.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes! Actually this past year. I was hesitant and uncertain of the growth of my business and I almost moved out of the country to “start fresh” but I sort of realized that would be running. Running from a hard thing I am being called into. While it would have been fun and challenging and rewarding in it’s own way to move abroad the harder thing was to stay and face myself, my flaws, and cultivate the things I felt I was missing like a community and self-trust.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
Honestly, yes and no. The public version of me is real, I don’t fake who I am. But it’s also curate… I show up in the ways other people want and need to see me. I also work hard to overcome my bad habits and flaws so I don’t continue unhealthy patterns in relationships. The deeper stuff like that, the messy processing, the moments of doubt, the parts I’m still figuring out… that sometimes stays behind the scenes. Not because it’s fake to leave it out, but because I need to understand and learn from it before it becomes content.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
What I’ve come to understand is that health isn’t black and white. It’s not just about being “good” or “bad,” or doing all the right things.

True health is layered. It’s not just your habits, it’s your mindset, your nervous system, your beliefs about your body. You can eat the perfect meal and still feel like crap if you’re drowning in stress or stuck in self-criticism. Healing isn’t just about what you do it’s about how you think, how you feel, and how safe your body feels.
